Is math scary or fun? Some kids would say it's the former. However, with guidance and the right learning tools, math can be a joy to work with. Developer L'Escapadou provides a helping hand with their latest app, Math Wizard for Kids.
An Interactive Sandbox for Exploring Math Concepts
Math Wizard for Kids is a new generation of virtual manipulatives designed to help kids understand mathematical concepts. It has two modes, Sandbox and Exercises, both of which allow kids to manipulate and experiment with numbers. The approach is fairly simple to understand, and can be used with kids ages 5 to 12.
The Sandbox mode is an open-ended experience where kids interact with mathematical expressions to figure out how they work. They drag numbers from the bottom of the screen to the workspace, then on top of other numbers to perform mathematical operations. For example, they can drag +5 on top of -2 to make 3. Besides addition and subtraction, kids also discover math symbols, equality and inequality, and how to manipulate terms of math expressions and equations.
In Exercises mode, kids attempt to reproduce an expression or equation from another expression or equation. The app already includes hundreds of built-in exercises, but you can also create your own.
Parents Need to Know
Math Wizard for Kids can be customized in many ways. For example, numbers can be displayed using either digits or beads, and voices can be enabled to read numbers and operations aloud. Parents or teachers can also customize the numbers available in the sandbox, and even fine-tune the animation speed. Simply tap the Settings button to bring up these options, and adjust as necessary.
The app lets you add unlimited number of users and view reports for each one. It's available in 15 languages including Spanish, French, Chinese, and Arabic. It has no third-party ads and no in-app purchases. No internet connection is necessary to play.
Things I Like
Math Wizard for Kids is a handy tool for kids who are struggling with basic algebra or are just beginning to dip their toes into the wonderful world of math. The open-ended approach promotes curiosity and encourages them to be comfortable with numbers. Learning happens organically as kids play and explore.
With plenty of customization options, the app will cater to a wide range of abilities. If the need rises, parents or teachers can set up very targeted exercises, for example, multiplications by 9 only. On the down side, the vast number of options may overwhelm new users. The parents' section provides some tips for using the app, but it could use more concrete examples to help cut down setup time. The reports could also be more informative instead of simply showing raw data, but overall, the app is off to a good start.
I'd suggest checking out Math Wizard for Kids if you're looking for an app to help your kids understand basic algebra. It's well made, easy enough for kids to use, and you can customize it to adapt to your child's abilities and requirements.
