Learning about shapes and colors is a fundamental part in any child's development. Wonderkind's Puzzle Shapes app aims to make the whole process a lot more fun.
Four Game Modes with 200+ Tasks
In Puzzle Shapes, kids learn about shapes and colors by matching toy blocks. They will be given two groups of shapes: one principal shape on the center of the screen and one separate group on the top. Their task is to drag the shapes from the top that matches the principal shape. If their answer is correct, confetti appears and they move on to the next task. As they progress, the difficulty level also increases and more shapes are introduced in various colors and sizes.
When kids start the app, they can choose from four game modes. The first mode is the simplest and recommended for kids who are only beginning to learn. In this mode, kids learn to distinguish shapes only: triangles, squares, circles, and others. Then, in the second mode, they also learn to take into account the colors of the shapes. The third mode adds counting into the mix: dots are embedded into the principal shape, and kids must find which shapes have the same number of dots.
The fourth mode is unique in that it requires kids to recreate colorful models using simple shapes. It's similar to tangram but in 3D, and the models can be rotated to help with the assembly. A variety of designs is available, including bird, fish, tractor, locomotive, and lighthouse.
Parents Need to Know
Puzzle Shapes is suitable for ages 2-5. It doesn't contain any text so reading isn't necessary to play. Navigation is simple enough for kids, and there are visual hints in case they are stuck.
Parents who wish to monitor their child's progress in the app may do so through the Statistics page. Simply tap on the chart icon on the main screen, and the app will show you which tasks have been completed and their difficulty level.
Puzzle Shapes is free to download for iPhone and iPad. The initial download gives you one level for each game mode. If you wish to unlock the full content with over 200 tasks, you will have to make a single in-app purchase. The app has no third-party ads, and all links that take you outside the app are secured behind a parental gate.
Things I Like
Puzzle Shapes makes the learning process enjoyable. Even though it lacks the bells and whistles other kids’ apps tend to have, it’s engaging from start and end. The design of the game makes it so that solving the task at hand becomes the reward, and for that reason alone I’d say the app is worth looking into.
More than just helping kids with their shapes and colors, Puzzle Shapes promotes logical thinking and improves motor skills. Kids also develop spatial awareness as they learn to distinguish 2D and 3D shapes. As the cherry on top, parents can keep up with their child’s progress through the built-in statistics.
