Do your kids love stories and music? If they do, you'd want to check out Ladybug Band. Developed by Rain Boot Media, the app captures young readers with a funny story, catchy tune, and virtual instruments.
Join the Band
Ladybug Band is a rhyming story that transports kids to the idyllic island of Kacha, where various animals live and play freely. The highlight of the island is the Ladybug Band, a group of instrument-wielding ladybugs that draw crowds from all directions.
In this interactive book, kids are more than just passive readers as they touch, draw, and shake their device to make things happen on every page. For example, they can tap to make the crabs tap their feet, trace the line on screen to make the fire pop and crackle, or draw in the sand with their fingers. At the end of the book, they can dance to the band's hit song, Coconut Jamboree, and even try playing an instrument in the band.
When kids start the app, they can choose to read along with the narrator or read the story by themselves. The app shows the text on every page, but note that there is no text highlighting. The story is currently available in English only.
Parents Need to Know
Ladybug Band is suitable for ages two and up. The simple words and catchy rhymes are great to engage young readers, plus the vibrant pictures are great to look at. The narrator is excellent at building up excitement throughout the story, but parents can also opt to read the story to their kids if they want.
The app has no third-party ads and no in-app purchases, and doesn't require an Internet connection to use. There is an unprotected link to the developer's site at the end of the book, but otherwise the app is completely safe for kids.
Things I Like
Ladybug Band is an excellent app for the whole family. The story is delightful, and kids will have fun discovering all the small interactions throughout the app. The illustrations are great-looking as well.
The best part, however, is certainly where kids get to become part of the band at the end of book. Here, they can record themselves singing the "Coconut Jamboree" or playing various instruments: a guitar, a drum set, or a reed (pan flute). They can save up to six recordings, and show these off to family and friends later on.
Ladybug Band is a solid pick if your kids love stories about music and animals. It features not only a great story but also engaging animations, clear narration, and good music. Most entertaining is the part where kids can jam with the band and record themselves playing different instruments. Highly recommended!
