The best educational apps for kids don't always need fancy bells and whistles to be engaging. They can be simple and elegant yet effective and motivating. Busy Shapes & Colors is a great example of such an app. Created by Edoki Academy, the app is a fun virtual playground in which toddlers and preschoolers can learn the names of 11 shapes and 11 colors.
Put the Shapes into the Correct Holes
In Busy Shapes & Colors, kids learn to recognize and sort shapes and colors by dragging colorful shapes into the correct holes. As they do so, the app says the names of the shapes and colors out loud. The difficulty level increases gradually as kids progress through 150 seamless levels and encounter new shapes and colors. They will also come across various obstacles, such as machines that can change a shape's form and color.
The app offers three play modes: colors, shapes, and colors & shapes. In the Colors game, kids must sort the pieces into the holes based on their colors. In the Shapes game, they sort the pieces by their shapes instead. The Colors & Shapes game combines the two concepts for an extra layer of challenge.
Parents Need to Know
Busy Shapes & Colors comes with a gated area where parents can track their child's progress and customize the gameplay. For instance, they can turn off the background music or change the app's language to any of the supported 15 languages. They can also set the number of levels their child must complete before he or she is rewarded with a cute penguin animation.
If the child is struggling with a specific shape or color, parents can access a "focus" mode that presents only that shape or color to practice with. This mode is accessible from the Progress Chart menu that is present both on the main screen and in the parents' area.
As always with Edoki Academy apps, it is possible to create multiple player profiles. This allows parents to track different kids on the same device.
Busy Shapes & Colors is free to download and try, but to get the most out of the app you'll need to unlock the full game via an in-app purchase. The purchase is one time only and secured by a parental gate.
The app has no third-party ads but shows the developer's other apps on the main screen. The links to these apps are also secured by a parental gate.
Things I Like
Busy Shapes & Colors, like the other titles in the Busy app series, is a fantastic gem that makes learning more exciting and meaningful. The gameplay is elegant, intuitive, and effective in getting the lessons to stick. The difficulty level is just right, and kids will feel challenged but not stressed out.
In addition to learning about shapes and colors, kids will also sharpen their fine motor skills. Some levels feature shapes that move, where others will require kids to maneuver their desired shape around other pieces to get to the correct hole. These benefits, along with the ability to track the child's progress in the app, makes Busy Shapes & Colors a great addition to your child's learning repertoire.
Busy Shapes & Colors is a solid choice if you want an app to help your kids learn about shapes and colors. Built for toddlers, this beautiful app offers simple yet engaging gameplay and perfectly adjusted challenges. Excellent for ages two and up.
