Telling time is an important skill that every child needs to acquire sooner than later. When kids no longer struggle with numbers, they are ready to learn how to tell time. You can start simple, by introducing them to the concept of time before incorporating a clock into the lessons. For an excellent app to assist your endeavor, check out Tell Time with Mulle Meck.
Learn to Tell Time
Tell Time with Mulle Meck is an interactive app that comprises two parts: short story and practice. In the story part, kids listen to a gentle narrator explain, with pictures and animations, what time is and why people have decided to measure it. They learn how many hours there are in a day and what hours and minutes are. They also assemble an analog clock by dragging numbers, dials, and clock hands onto their respective spots. In the process, they learn what the hands of the clock mean and what a clock face is.
After learning how to tell time using the hands of the clock, kids can put their newfound knowledge into practice with an endless stream of questions. The app will show a clock face, and kids must tap the correct answer from three possible options. Just like in the real world, they will encounter various clock models, including ones with Roman numerals and plain faces.
Parents Need to Know
Telling Time with Mulle Meck contains no third-party ads and no in-app purchases. When opening the app, you may notice a small link, "For Parents", on the main screen. This link leads to the developer's site, where you can read a letter from Mulle Meck's creators and app developers. This link is secured by a parental gate.
The app is available in several languages besides English, including Spanish, Japanese, German, and French. You can easily change the app's language by tapping on the flag on the main screen.
Things I Like
Telling Time with Mulle Meck is a fantastic app for young kids who are learning to tell time. The excellent narration and animated tutorials make the lessons easy to follow, and they also help kids get through the activities. The app doesn't dole out punishments when kids fail to solve a problem, and provides hints instead. It rewards kids for their effort by playing a cute animation of Buffa, Mulle Meck's dog, licking the screen after every few questions.
Overall, the app is great. What I'd love to see is the ability to customize the practice session, for instance, to show plain faces only. I'd also love a section which will allow kids to practice setting the hands on the clock.
Telling Time with Mulle Meck is a great choice if you're looking to help your kids learn to tell time. The story part helps them understand the concept of time and clocks, and then the practice session helps them master telling time on different clocks. All in all, I would highly recommend the app for ages 7 and up.
