Music is an all-around excellent source of entertainment for kids, whether they just love to listen to music or create their own. For kids who fall into the latter group, there is a new app that they might like: Musilla DJ. It's a musical toolbox that lets kids experiment with beats and sounds to create their own musical soundscape.
Drop the Beat
In Mussila DJ, kids layer together songs, loops, beats, and sounds to create their very own tunes. They can control the speed and volume of each sound, add effects such as echo, and scratch vinyls -- just like a real DJ.
Creating music in the app is pretty simple. All the tools kids need to start are placed in a single screen: the songs/vinyls are at the top, the turntable in the middle, and the beats at the bottom. To play a song, kids simply drag the vinyl from the top and place it onto the turntable. To drop some beats, they just tap the buttons.
The app comes with a decently-sized sound library, which includes all kinds of sounds from percussions to cutesy monster voices, but kids can also add their own sounds through their device's microphone. They just tap the microphone button, then choose if they want to record a song or a beat. Similarly, they can also record their live performance by tapping the record button in the middle of the screen.
Parents Need to Know
As you might imagine, giving your kids an app that makes all sorts of noises can end up really well or really badly. Which is why I would recommend Mussila DJ for older kids who already have a sense of rhythm and harmony. It's perfect for boys and girls alike, plus it has zero violence.
At the time of this review, Mussila DJ is free to download from the App Store with no ads and no in-app purchases. The developer notes that it will eventually be a paid app, so if this looks like something your kids might enjoy, now would be the time to get it before the price hikes. The app doesn't require an Internet connection to play.
Things I Like
Mussila DJ is a fantastic app that help kids get creative and hone their music sense. It's simple to use, and packs some great features that allow experimentation with variations in rhythms and beats. The approach is mostly hands-off, so the overall experience depends on how much your kids are willing to explore. That said, it's really, really hard not to have fun in this app.
If your kids love Mussila DJ, you might also want to check out the developer's previous release, Mussila. It's a game that makes learning the basics in music a lot of fun, and is great for beginners and music experts alike.
If your kids fancy the idea of becoming a DJ, Mussila DJ is an excellent app for that. This simple app makes it easy for them to create their own remixes and record their performance. Highly recommended for kids aged 6-11.
