Do your kids love trains? If they do, they will love Train Kit. Available now on the App Store, it's an interactive app that aims to bring the joy of playing with toy train sets to your iPhone and iPad.
Build Your Tiny Toy World
In Train Kit, kids create immersive little worlds for their toy trains. They start with an empty grid and add track tiles, tunnels and bridges, trees, houses, and other tidbits. Then, once the tracks have been laid out, they can drop their desired trains and carriages onto the board and watch them go.
Designed for ages 6-8, the app is quite easy to use. Adding or moving items, for example, is a simple as dragging them with your fingers. Everything snap together in a grid, so lining up track tiles is a breeze. Simple train controls, available on the right side of the screen, allow kids to speed up, slow down, or reverse their trains. Kids can also switch tracks with a tap, and get their trains to take different routes.
One notable feature in Train Kit is the train driver view. When kids tap on the film projector icon on the top left, the app will switch from a top-down view of the grid to a first-person view of the train. This allows kids to experience what it's like to whizz through the tiny world in their toy train.
Parents Need to Know
Train Kit is really quite easy to use. Even though it is recommended for ages 6 and up, younger kids should also be able to enjoy the app. There are no rules in the app, only endless creative play. Kids can build whatever they want in a totally open-ended world.
The app is child-safe: it has no third-party adverts or in-app purchases. It doesn't require Internet access, and it has no links to external sites.
Things I Like
Have you ever wished you could shrink down and hop into one of your model train carriages? Train Kit is probably the closest thing to experiencing that wish. Kids (and kids at heart) will be delighted that they could enjoy a first-person view of the world they have built, and be inspired to create even more. It's also helpful that the controls are super easy to work with, and you can get your tracks up and running in a matter of minutes.
Overall, Train Kit is a fantastic app for kids who love trains, but there is always room for improvements. For starters, it would be nice if the grid could be expanded to have more room to build. It would also be nice if we could save a world and come back to it later.
Update: as of v1.0.3, tracks are now automatically saved, so you can come back to it any time.
