Do you dream of a fun way to help your kids improve their English grammar and reading fluency? Smashing Grammar is the app for you. Available now on the App Store, it's an exciting mobile game for kids aged 9 and up to refresh their grammar skills and learn thousands of new words.
Smash the Nouns
Smashing Grammar has not one but six games that focus on different grammar concepts: nouns, verbs, syllables, spelling, tenses, and plural forms. In each game, kids try to tap, as many as they can, words that fall into a specified category. For example, they might be asked to tap all the nouns or all the verbs.
With every correct answer, kids net some points and fill up the meter on the left side of the screen. On the contrary, every incorrect answer causes them to lose points and decreases the meter. The goal of the game is to fill up the meter up to the target mark before you run out of time or lives.
To keep things challenging, various bonus items can be found in each round. These items appear at random alongside the words, and can give points, extra time, or extra lives. Watch out for the bombs though: they deduct points and lives.
Once the timer runs out, kids will be able to continue to the next round if their meter is sufficiently filled. If the meter is not sufficiently filled, the game ends and the score is recorded. The top three scores of all time are then displayed on screen.
Parents Need to Know
Parents should know that Smashing Grammar makes for an excellent supplement to the learning process. While the app doesn't teach new concepts, it helps reinforce existing ones. It will be great in a classroom setting, though educators should note that the app doesn't yet have the option to create multiple user profiles.
As ever with Fairlady Media apps, there are no third-party adverts or in-app purchases. All the contents are included with the initial download, and no Internet connection is necessary to use the app.
Things I Like
Smashing Grammar takes the chore out of learning grammar. The arcade-style games are appealing for school-age kids who like challenging themselves and competing with their peers. Because the app keeps track of the top three scores, kids are motivated to perform well.
While the gameplay itself is fairly basic, it can be surprisingly challenging. Kids must be both fast and accurate if they want to keep the game going for a long time. The pace picks up with every round so the more kids play the more their grammar skills and reading fluency are tested.
What's nice about the game is that nouns and verbs are presented in the context of a sentence. This makes it easier for kids to find the correct answers and distinguish parts of speech.
In future updates, it would be nice if the game had a multiplayer mode where kids can compete against their peer on the same device. It would also be nice if kids could enter their names alongside the scores so they can feel proud of their achievements.
With six arcade-style games that focus on different grammar concepts, Smashing Grammar will excite even the most reluctant learner. It's easy to pick up and play, and fun to use in the classroom too. Endless rounds of game with increasing difficulty provide challenges for all skill levels and motivate kids to keep improving. All in all, it's a great app to have in your teaching and learning toolkit.
