Throughout the history of the earth, many animals have gone extinct because of natural occurrences and human activities. Creatures from the Past is an interactive iPad app that displays 60 extinct animals with easy-to-read information and high-quality pictures, so that kids and adults can learn more about these creatures.
Learn about 60 Extinct Animals
The Creatures from the Past app is a digital encyclopedia that includes animal from as far back as 400 million years ago. For each animal, a descriptive sheet is included that denotes the animal’s weight, height, length, diet, and habitat. There is also a gallery of pictures that show the animal in different angles, a size comparison with a human adult and child, and an interactive 360-degree view of the animal’s 3D model. Almost 350 pictures are available, so you can study each animal in detail.
There are two ways to browse the app. The first way is to scroll through each animal page one by one, like a slideshow. The other way is to use the multi-criteria search area, where you can filter the animals by name, age, and diet. The search page also lists all the animals, so you can quickly find the one what you want.
When you select an animal, its name will be read aloud. There isn’t a read-aloud feature for the descriptive sheet, so this app is best for kids who are able to read on their own. The app is currently available in English and French, with support for the Spanish language coming soon.
Parents Need to Know
Creatures from the Past is child-friendly. It has no in-app purchases or third-party adverts, and can be used without an Internet connection. There are links to external sites, such as the developer’s website, but they are secured with a parental lock.
From the secured parameter section, you can customize the app’s settings. For example, you can choose whether to display numeric information using the Metric system or US Standard Units. You can also turn on or off the narration and ambient sounds of the app.
What’s nice about Creatures from the Past is that you can use it as a starting point for valuable discussions about extinction. For example, you can discuss with your kids how the loss of a species might impact the environment and what we can do to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Things I Like
Creatures from the Past is an excellent app for young readers. If your child likes reading about dinosaurs, it’s very likely that they will enjoy this interactive encyclopedia. There is a fair amount of information available to keep curious kids satisfied, though they might need additional resources if they want to get into details such as an animal’s anatomy and cause of extinction. The pictures are gorgeous and crisp, while the size comparison helps kids visualize how big the animals were.
In the future, the app would benefit from additional features such as the ability to keep track of your favorite animals. I would also like to see a map that displays where each animal lived, and interactive timeline that shows all the animals in their respective time periods.
The Creatures from the Past app provides an extensive look into 60 extinct animals from millions of years ago. With a simple interface, gorgeous 3D models, and 360-degree view for each animal, this app will engage kids to learn for hours on end. I highly recommend it for ages 9-11 with a keen interest in science and history.
