Kids love music, and musical apps have always been a staple in our collection. The latest to attract our attention is Melody Jams, in which kids mix and match characters in a band to create their own songs.
Pick Your Instrument
In Melody Jams, kids assemble a garage band from a dozen of kooky, instrument-playing monsters. The band can have up to five members, and kids can mix and match monsters to achieve different sounds. For example, they can swap guitar for the drums, violin for vocals, or tambourine for xylophone.
Kids can also arrange each member’s position on stage to get different beats and animations. Generally, members that are placed on the star platforms will rock notes in a higher key. On the contrary, members placed on the ground will play in a lower key. What’s nice is that kids can switch the positions anytime and instantly hear the change in the music.
Kids who want to jam together with the band can select their own instrument by tapping the keyboard icon on the top right. They can select from a variety of instruments, including keyboards, drums, and xylophone.
Parents Need to Know
Designed for ages 5 and under, Melody Jams is all about pressure-free creativity. There is no score keeping and no rules, so kids can experiment freely with different sounds and instruments. And for grown-ups: don’t worry, the band always plays in harmony no matter which musicians you choose.
The app is available for free from the App Store. The initial download gives you one scene (“The Garage”) but you can purchase more scenes via in-app purchases (secured with a parental lock). Only one scene (“The Big Show”) can be purchased at the time of this review, with more planned to come. Each scene introduces new characters, instruments, and song. For example, The Big Show scene has a pan flute that you can’t find in The Garage scene.
The app doesn’t have third-party advertising and links to social media. Internet connection is required for downloading purchased content but not for playing. Once your download has been completed, you can take your device offline and play the game without any issue.
Things I Like
The mechanic behind Melody Jams isn’t exactly unique (Toca Boca already made something similar a few years ago), but it’s well executed. The app not only has diverse characters with unique background stories and instruments, but also good graphics and upbeat songs. It’s also easy to use and will appeal to a wide range of age.
What sets Melody Jams apart from similar apps is the fact that you can play alongside the band on your own instrument. This creates a sense of involvement, and can be useful for practicing basic music concepts such as tempo and harmony.
Kids will love jamming together adorable monsters and making their own music in Melody Jams. Since the instruments are always in harmony, there’s no wrong way to play. The production value is excellent in this app, and both graphics and audio are quite polished. All in all, it’s highly recommended for ages two and up.
