Does your child love making faces at the camera? If so, Gigglebug’s Face Race is an app they might like. The game, from Finnish developer Gigglebug Entertainment, tasks kids to copy expressions from animated characters. The more accurately they replicate the faces, the higher their score (and the bigger the laughs).
The game works like this: after choosing one of four characters to play with, the player looks into their device’s front-facing camera to have their picture calibrated against the frame. They then attempt to copy the character’s expressions as the app snaps pictures. The face detection algorithm evaluates the elements in the pictures — such as the positions of the eyes, cheeks, teeth, and the tilt of the head — to give feedback in the form of playful star rating.
What’s nice is that at the end of each game, the player will have a collage of silly photos that they can save to the Camera Roll or share as they like. The latter option comes with a gesture lock to keep kids from posting to social networks.
What’s great about Gigglebug’s Face Race is it brings people together. My friends and family were quick to jump in when they saw me use the app, and soon we were pulling faces at each other. The app just makes you laugh, and you know what they say about laughter: it’s contagious. And it brightens up your day, regardless whether you’re a kid or an adult.
Gigglebug’s Face Race is completely free to download from the App Store. It contains no in-app purchases and third-party advertising. Grown-ups should also know that photos taken in the app are not sent anywhere, and won’t be saved to the Camera Roll unless you choose it.
If you like the idea behind Gigglebug’s Face Race, you will probably like the other Gigglebug app we reviewed. It shares the core idea of spreading positivity, and it is a delightful app that gets kids tickling grumpy animals to make them laugh.
