Nursery rhymes have been around for ages, and for a good reason: children love them. Researchers also believe that nursery rhymes can benefit young children in many aspects, including language development.
If you are looking for a nursery rhymes app for your child, you might like PINKFONG Mother Goose. It has 20 classic titles that your child can sing along to, such as Humpty Dumpty, Wheels on the Bus, and Baa, Baa, Black Sheep. It also includes playful activities, for when your child decides to take a break from the music.
When your child opens the app, she can select a nursery rhyme based on the following categories: Animals, Numbers, Action, and Stories. The nursery rhymes are presented as sets, with each set containing an animated music video, a picture book, a mini game, and a coloring sheet.
The music videos are, obviously, the focus of the app. They are short but well made, featuring catchy arrangements and adorable cartoon characters dressed in vibrant colors. Each video also has the lyrics displayed on screen so your child can learn the words and sing along.
The picture books feature the same nursery rhymes read aloud by a narrator. The pace of the reading is naturally slower than the music video, thus allowing your child to learn the words in the rhyme. Highlighting text is included to assist with reading.
In addition to picture books, each nursery rhyme has an accompanying mini game. The game mechanic may differ for each nursery rhyme, but none is too complicated for young children. Some of the games your child will find in the app include jigsaw puzzles, card matching, and running games.
If your child loves to color, she will enjoy coloring the pictures provided for each nursery rhyme. Various coloring tools and patterns are available, including glitter paints. Once your child is happy with her work, she can save her picture to the Camera Roll.
A cool feature in PINKFONG Mother Goose is that you can download the music videos and save them locally on your device. Once downloaded, the videos can be played back without having to connect to the Internet. This makes the app convenient for travel.
I have to note that nursery rhymes apps are a dime a dozen on the App Store, but PINKFONG Mother Goose is among the better ones I’ve encountered. It has high production values: polished graphics, professional audio recording, and intuitive user interface. The addition of activities (games, picture book) provides extra value and helps lengthen the app’s shelf life. I do wish that more songs were available, though.
If you’re interested in checking out PINKFONG Mother Goose, know that the app is free to download. When you open the app for the first time, you will be able to download 4 videos for free: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep; Six Little Ducks; Teddy Bear; and Hey, Diddle, Diddle. You can unlock the rest of the videos by making in-app purchases.
It is good to know that even though the app has in-app purchases, it has no third-party ads. All external links are secured behind a parental lock — one must punch in the correct number sequence to access a link. This prevents little fingers from accessing features meant for grown-ups.
One thing to note is that at the time of this review, the nursery rhymes are available in English only. The app listing shows support for multiple languages, but during testing I found that only the Info section is translated when your device is in another language. Hopefully the developer will consider adding a more extensive language support in the future.
A polished app with a fairly good selection of music videos, PINKFONG Mother Goose is well worth a look if you’re looking for nursery rhymes app. You should also check out PINKFONG’s YouTube channel, which contains many excellent music videos for kids.
