If you have a first grader at home, you have probably helped them with math homework or exam preparations. My six-year-old Philip is preparing for a written math test this Thursday that focuses on addition within 100. This time, in addition to my providing him with mock up tests, he gets to practice his skills with the new Space Math Hero app.
Save the Planets from Evil Monsters
Space Math Hero is staged in a universe where kids try to save planets from evil monsters. The invaders want to destroy the planets by shooting laser beams from their spaceships. Your child’s task is to take down the monsters before they shoot three times and destroy the planet.
To shoot a monster’s spaceship, your child must solve an arithmetic equation attached to that spaceship. Once they have typed in their answer, they tap on a spaceship to shoot at it. If they answer correctly, the spaceship will be destroyed. Otherwise, they are allowing the monster enough time to beam its laser at the planet.
To save a planet, your child must plow through 10 levels of increasing difficulty. Some equations are easy to solve, such as ‘3 + 8 = ?’. But soon enough, your child will face a mix of up to three equations with different operations and difficulties.
Parents Need to Know
Space Math Hero is suitable for kids ages 5+ who are looking for a fun way to practice their basic arithmetic skills. The app supports an unlimited number of user profiles, each with their own passwords. This allows the app to be used in a family or classroom setting.
First-time users should note that an email address is required during the profile creation process. However, afterwards you can use the app without connecting to the Internet as all user data is saved locally on the device. The app has no in-app purchases, third-party ads, or links to social networks.
Things I Like
Space Math Hero is a great mental math exercise for kids. There is a time limit before the evil monsters start shooting at the planet. Unless you have a pencil and paper beside you while playing, your child is pretty much training mental arithmetics.
The app has been very helpful in getting my six-year-old ready for his upcoming math test at school. If your child has different needs, you can always try the practice mode. This mode allows you to choose the numbers and operations to include. The practice mode allows you to define any combination of operations and numbers up to 12.
Space Math Hero is a great math drill app that offers interactive exercises for ages 5+. It covers everything from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division. The app supports unlimited user profiles, which means it’s suitable for classrooms. If you have a first grader, I highly recommend you get this app.
