Since Toca Hair Salon's release in 2011, Toca Boca's playful hairstyling app has captivated millions of kids around the world. Five years and one sequel-app later, the famed app-maker has set out to repeat their success with Toca Hair Salon 3. Billed as "the most diverse Hair Salon app yet", it introduces more diverse characters, hair types, and even beards!
Cut and Color in Style
Toca Hair Salon 3 plays out much like the other apps in the series. When you begin the app, you select a character you'd like to style. Four characters are presented at a time, but you can tap the refresh button on the top right to rotate between dozens of starter characters.
Once inside the salon, you can swipe through several workspaces where you can wash, dry, color, cut, and change the texture of your character's hair. What's new is the small curling iron, which allows you to create a kinky hair texture. There are also new braiding tools: a large one and a smaller one, so you can create braids of different sizes.
Also new to the app is the shaving station. Every character in Toca Hair Salon 3 can grow a beard regardless of their gender, simply by applying some lotion to the facial area. You can then trim, shave, and style the beard with the appropriate styling tools.
Similar to the other apps in the series, Toca Hair Salon 3 allows you to put on various accessories on your character. The difference is that the new app has a bigger selection, including hats, glasses, jewelry, pins, hair clips, and more. It's also possible to change the character's clothes and snap a picture in the photo booth with various backdrops.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Toca Hair Salon 3 includes the ability to disable photo-saving features from the app to your device. Simply go to your device's Settings and find the icon for Toca Hair Salon 3, then toggle snapshots to "off". You can also turn off music and "For Parents" and "News" buttons from this menu.
Like all Toca Boca apps, Toca Hair Salon 3 has kid-friendly interface with no in-app purchases or third-party adverts. It's also free of rules, levels, or high scores. It doesn't require an Internet connection, so you can take it with you when you are traveling.
Things I Like
One thing that I really like about Toca Boca is they go great lengths to make their app accessible to everyone, regardless of age, race, gender, and even language. This commitment for inclusiveness and diversity is also evident in Toca Hair Salon 3, which offers gender-neutral aesthetics and characters with a variety of skin tones, hair types, and the ability to grow beards. This means that every child can find characters of their likeness as they get creative and have fun in the app.
Gameplay-wise, the app is as polished as ever. The hair strands bounce, flow, and move smoothly beneath your fingertips, and the tools provide endless styling options. There are a lot more accessories, from jackets and patches to hats and glasses. They are trendy too: there are patches shaped like the "fire" and "thumbs-up" emojis.
With Toca Hair Salon 3, Toca Boca has answered most feature requests from their fans. The only thing I want now is to be able to turn the character around so I can style the hair on the back of their head and maybe give them a trendy hair tattoo!
Whether you're new to the Toca Hair Salon series or are a longtime fan, you'll surely be delighted by Toca Hair Salon 3. This terrific app packs all-new features, notably more diverse characters, the ability to grow beards, new hairstyling tools, and lots of gender-neutral accessories. It's kid-friendly, yet very satisfying for the whole family to play. Highly recommended!
