One of the ways to develop listening skills in children is by introducing them to all kinds of sounds. Domi Domi Listen and Guess is an app made for this purpose: it's a game that helps kids recognize animals and objects by the sounds they make. Using the app, kids also learn to associate pictures with their sounds and discover simple words to expand their vocabulary.
Guess the Sound
There are two modes of play in the app: Listen and Guess. In Listen, kids tap on pictures of animals or objects to listen to the sound they make. In Guess, they try to guess which animal or object makes the sound they hear. At the end of each try, a narrator calls out the name of the animal or object. There is no time limit or scoring system; the app is purely for learning and exploring.
The app has 6 categories: Animals, Wildlife, Around the house, Vehicles, Instruments, and Mixed. Each category consists of around a dozen of items, and in all there are 80 sounds kids can discover. In Around the House, for example, kids can discover the low hum of a microwave, the beeping of an alarm clock, and the sloshing sound of a toilet.
The app is available in English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Polish, and Russian. From the secured section for parents, grown-ups can set the preferred language for the narration and the text. They can also turn off either or both features.

Parents need to know that Domi Domi Listen and Guess is designed to help kids ages 2-4 sharpen their listening skills and develop interest in the sounds around them. The app introduces them to a variety of new sounds and words, including ones that they might not encounter every day.
The app is safe for kids. It has no in-app purchases, no third-party adverts, and no unprotected links. It's also playable without an Internet connection.
Things I Like
Domi Domi Listen and Guess is a simple but useful app for young kids. It's made well: the graphics are sharp, the color palette is appealing, and the audio quality is quite good (though you might want to turn up the volume of your device for some sounds). There is a neat feature that allows grown-ups to mute individual sounds that their kids are afraid of, which shows that the developer really put some thought into the design of the app.
In terms of content, there is enough variety of both familiar and "exotic" sounds to keep kids engaged in learning. I like that the app includes ambient sounds, like the rustling of a paper bag or the jingling of coins. Though we grown-ups may not pay much attention to these noises anymore, to young kids they might be foreign and interesting to learn. I also like that the app supports other languages beside English, and hope that more sounds and languages will be added in the future.
If you're looking for an app to introduce young kids to noises and sounds, give Domi Domi Listen and Guess a try. Simple yet well thought out, the app helps kids develop listening skills and learn new words at the same time. It includes 80 high-quality sounds and pictures across 6 categories, so there is enough variety to keep kids entertained. Available in 7 languages including English, Chinese, and Spanish.
