Toca Boca has built a reputation for themselves by creating digital apps that are unique, playful, and safe for kids. Now the popular app maker is venturing into a new territory: kids' video.
Discover Original and Curated Videos From Around the Web
Available now on the App Store, Toca TV is an interactive video platform designed for kids ages 5 to 9. It offers thousands of original and curated videos from around the web, across various topics: Minecraft gameplay, DIY tutorials, animated shorts, music videos, and many more. Each video is handpicked and prescreened to make sure it's appropriate for kids, and there is never any third-party advertising or sponsored content.
Like all Toca Boca apps, navigation is simple and straightforward. Kids can discover new videos by flicking through them in a stack, using the search feature, or browsing by category. When they find a video they like, they can drag it to the Favorites bar so they can come back to it later.
A unique feature in Toca TV is that kids don't just sit back and watch. When the inspiration strikes, they can record their own videos using the app's recording feature and animated filters. These videos are then saved locally on the device.
Parents Need to Know
In Toca TV, you can create a user profile for each child who uses the app. This allows each user to keep their favorite videos and searches.
A subscription is required to use Toca TV. You can download the app for free, and use it three times at no cost. Once the trial period is over, you can sign up to continue using the service. At the time of writing, the subscription costs $4.99 for one month, $24.99 for six months, and $39.99 for twelve months. You can unsubscribe anytime.
Things I Like
Toca TV is not the first app to offer on-demand videos for kids, but it's one of the best. It's well made, easy to use, and more importantly, safe for kids. Manual curation ensures that kids will never find anything inappropriate, and keeps everything up to standards.
The videos themselves are high quality. The topics are diverse and up to date, so every kid is sure to find something he or she will love. One of my favorite shows is "What's Going On", a series of Toca Boca-produced shorts made using the Toca Life apps. These shorts are simple, but they show that it's possible to create an entertaining video with the (Toca Boca) apps you already have.
Unlike most apps that focus solely on video consumption, Toca TV wants kids to also create their own videos. This is a great idea, and it's executed nicely with the inclusion of an easy-to-use recording tool.
Overall, I think Toca TV is a fantastic app. I only wish it came with a feature to save videos for offline viewing, which would make it a lifesaver while traveling.
I highly recommend Toca TV if you are looking for a streaming service for kids. This easy-to-use app has plenty of high-quality videos across multiple topics that kids love, such as Minecraft and DIY. Everything is manually curated, so you can be sure that your kids will only see age-appropriate content. Highly recommended for any Toca Boca fan.
