Those who enjoy fishing would agree that being in the water can teach you a lot of things: patience, for once, and an appreciation for nature. And if you’re fishing with Grandpa, you can also learn colors, numbers, and problem solving.
I’m talking about the titular character in developer Fairlady Media’s newest app, Fishing with Grandpa. He’s the mascot of the Grandpa and Grandma series of apps, which provide children with an opportunity to practice many primary skills. In the new app, the friendly figure will take children on a trip to the lake where they can learn about colors, numbers, and of course, fishing.
Fishing with Grandpa
In all, Fishing with Grandpa offers 11 games that are suitable for ages 3-6. Most of the games are educational, but several are more for fun. This keeps the gameplay balanced and the children engaged.
The educational games are quite varied, in terms of mechanic and the skills covered. One game, for example, will test your number skill by asking you to tap the groups of with a specific number of fish. Others will ask you to solve a jigsaw puzzle, find the odd one out in a group, or measure the fish using a ruler.
As for the interactive extras, they’re all made to complete the fishing theme. Some of the things you can do include choosing a lure and hooking a fish with said lure. Once you’ve reeled in the fish, Grandpa will tell you its name. You can then release it into the net for your collection.
In addition to the games, the app also includes live-action videos about fishing, including how lures are used, examining a lure, and what is a bobber. As with the rest of the app, each video is narrated by Grandpa himself.
Parents Need to Know
Fishing with Grandpa covers a broad range of educational content. Among others, children will learn to recognize colors and number groups, measure objects using a ruler, and improve their problem solving skills. They’ll also expand their vocabulary with fishing terms such as lure, bobber, reel, hook, bait, and so on.
If you go to the Settings menu from the main screen, you can select which activities are to be included in (or excluded from) the gameplay. This way, you can customize the game to your child’s level. It’s also useful if you want to help your child focus on a specific activity or skill.
If you’re interested in trying out Fishing with Grandpa, do note that iOS 8 is required to install the app. It has no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases, and all links that take the user outside the app are contained behind a parental gate. It’s currently available in English only.
Things I Like
The Grandpa and Grandma series of apps have always had interesting themes: a handyman’s workshop, kitchen, preschool, and now fishing. These are topics that children can relate to and may develop an interest in. The fact that the apps all include videos featuring real people and activities only add to their appeal.
What’s great about Fishing with Grandpa, and the rest of the apps in the series, is its lightheartedness; there’s no penalty for mistakes, just an encouragement to try again. And while there’s no dancing in the app — it’s probably difficult to dance in a boat — you can earn praises from Grandpa and give him high-fives.
Finally, my favorite activity in the app is trying to hook fish with your lure. In order not to scare the fish, you have to move slowly and steadily. This not only helps children improve their fine motor skills, but also teaches them to be patient.
Fishing with Grandpa is an activity app that provides children with the opportunity to practice a wide range of basic skills. In addition to basic school curriculum, it also teaches life skills through fun activities and live-action videos. With an interesting theme and overall great production values, it’s a highly recommended app for ages 3-6.
