I have been helping my five-year-old Philip prepare for written tests at his school. Since he started first grade, many things have changed. As a part of his assignments and exercises, he needs to read a lot of stories and texts. To prepare for his English and Math tests, he needs to practice his reading comprehension skills as often as possible.
If you’re in the same boat as I am, you might want to try this interactive storybook app called Rose Milany at the Beach. Even though the story is simple enough for a three-year-old to understand, the app includes a couple of reading comprehension games to test your child’s understanding in reading simple passages with accompanying illustrations.
Rose Milany at the Beach
The story starts with Rose Milany preparing to spend her day at the beach. You can help her by choosing a swimsuit for her to wear. Then, you can watch her playing with crab, shells, and starfishes. Other activities include building a sand castle, snorkeling, and sun bathing.
Each segment of the story is shown as a separate screen. Each screen consists of a simple passage accompanied by a contextual illustration. You can interact with the objects in the illustration, for example, playing with the crab, collecting the shells into the bucket, and trying on different sunglasses to see which one fits Rose best.
Once you have completed the storyline, you can start playing with the more exciting part of this app, i.e. the mini games. One of the mini games that you can play is helping Rose to clean the garbages that loiter the beach.
Parents Need to Know
Rose Milany at the Beach is the second story in the Rose Milany collection of interactive book apps. The first story is called Rose Milany attend le père Noël. It’s a French-only storybook that tells the story of Rose Milany waiting for Santa’s arrival. Contrary to the prequel, this sequel supports English, French, and Spanish.
The app works great without Internet connection. It doesn’t have any third-party apps, in-app purchases, or links to social networks.
Things I Like
After helping Philip practicing his reading comprehension skills, I really appreciate the two mini games included in this app. The first one is called The Memoread. It tests your understanding and memory of the story by asking you to choose the correct option for questions related to the story. For example, you may find questions asking the shape of the sandcastle that Rose makes and the ice cream flavors that Rose prefers.
The second mini game is called The Stickers. In this game, you paste each sticker to its appropriate placeholder to complete the story. This activity ensures that kids truly understand the storyline and are able to recall the details.
Rose Milany at the Beach is an interactive storybook app that can be used to test reading comprehension of kids ages 5+. It features a cute character, a relaxing story at the beach, and two great mini games that test your reading comprehension and attention to details. When you decide to get this app, don’t forget to watch the music video about Rose Milany’s adventurous spirit. You’re going to like it.
