Have you ever wondered how many countries are there in the world and where they are located? If you have, you might enjoy this new app from Montessorium: Intro to Geography - World Edition. It’s an expansive, Montessori-inspired educational tool that promotes geographic learning through puzzles, challenges, and coloring activities.
See the World
When you open the app, you can choose a continent: Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America, and Europe. On the right side of the screen is a roadmap consisting of 6 markers, which symbolize the activities you’ll be working on. Tap on the first marker to begin.
The first activity you’ll be doing is to drag the countries onto the highlighted areas on the map. The default is 6 countries at a time, but you can personalize your app (more on that later in the Parents Need to Know section). When you have placed a country in its appropriate location, the narrator will tell you its name.
Next, you’ll be shown each country individually so you can learn its shape and hear its name. After three countries have been presented, you’ll be asked to select the country by name. Once you’ve worked through all six countries, you then place them onto the map.
The third activity deliberately reiterates what you’ve learned so far. You’ll be asked to point out each country named by the narrator, and afterwards place them on the map. And in the fourth activity, you’ll be asked to draw lines to match the countries to their names.
The fifth activity introduces you to the flags of each country. You’ll be presented each flag individually, similar to how countries are introduced. Then, as requested by the narrator, you’re asked to tap the flag for a country.
The sixth and final activity in the roadmap is coloring the flags. Using the included template, you’ll trace each element on the flag and color them in. Like the rest of the app, no points will be given in this activity, so you can take as long as you like and have fun.
Once you’ve reached the end of the roadmap, you’ll be awarded with stamp for your passport. You can then replay the same roadmap, move on to the other countries in the same continent, or choose a different continent.
Parents Need to Know
Intro to Geography - World Edition is designed for ages 4 and up. It would make an especially great companion for children who are starting to learn about world geography at school. You can also use it to introduce young children to the countries of the world.
You should know that you can adjust the pace of the app by specifying how many states should be included in each set: 3, 6, 9, or 12. Young children might want to start with the smallest option. Do note that the app will be reset when you change these settings.
To change how many countries to work with at one time, go to the main screen and tap on the compass rose on the bottom right. You’ll be able to access the Parent Portal, which also includes interesting articles about the Montessori approach to learning.
Intro to Geography - World Edition is available in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and Italian. The initial download is free, with in-app purchases to unlock countries beyond what’s included in the first set for each continent.
The app contains no third-party advertising. All links and in-app purchases are secured to prevent kids from accessing them. You don’t need an Internet connection to use the app.
Please note that the app is only compatible with iPhone 6, 6+, and iPad.
Things I Like
The activities in World Edition are designed to promote memorization. Repetition does occur during the learning process, but there’s also a sense of progress as you go through each activity. After locating where a country is on the map, for example, you’ll have the chance to learn its shape and name. This provides learners with a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
A feature unique to World Edition is the ability to discover and color in each country’s flag. As you do so, you’ll discover that many flags share similar elements. This is sure to spark interesting discussions: is there a historical significance behind these similarities? How are these countries related to each other? Hopefully, by picking up on these fascinating details, learners will develop an interest in learning about the world around them.
Intro to Geography - World Edition is an app that encourages children (and adults) to be curious about the world around them. Using simple activities and puzzles, this beautiful app will help them learn the names, flags, and locations of every country in the world. Features include the ability to adjust the number of countries to work with at a time and support for a number of languages. Recommended for ages 4+.
