Have you ever taught your kids poetry? Regardless of your natively language, poetry is not many people’s forte. Some parents would neglect it, which in turn causes their kids to feel uncomfortable reading and creating one.
That’s why I’m grateful that the developers of Wit-Fit contacted us about their poems app. Positioned as a little rhyme app for witty kids, the app features 12 clever rhymes and witty poems for kids.
Fill in the Blanks
In Wit-Fit, you drag words to fill in the blanks. This is true even from the main menu of the app: you need to drag the word ‘Start’ or ‘Settings’ to start the app or to change the settings, respectively. This may feel unfamiliar at first, but it will feel more intuitive as you play with the first poem.
A poem may consists up to three sentences, with three to six words missing. Your task is to match the words from the sidebar onto the empty spots in the sentences. Here’s an example of the unfinished sentence:
The … would …, but his skates are too … for the …
By looking at the illustration accompanying the poem, you will find hints about the words would fit in the sentence. Keep in mind that everything needs to rhyme and sound witty somehow.
If the poem consists of three sentences, they will be spread around the screen. Typically, they will be grouped with their corresponding illustration. Always try to work your way from top to bottom, and left to right, as you choose which sentence to solve first.
Each scene has its own unique background sound and little animations. The game has no timer nor high score. Hence, you can take as many time as needed to complete a poem.
Parents Need to Know
Wii-Fit is more suitable for kids ages 7+. But, at the same time, the poems are short enough that ESL students would be able to enjoy and complete the poems on their own.
As I write this review, Wii-Fit only supports English. Because there are so few apps about poetry for kids, I’m sure many parents would appreciate support for other languages. If you want to leave a review, you can do so directly from within the app. Simply use the default code '0000' when the app prompts you for a parental code before redirecting you to the app’s page on the App Store.
There is one more thing that’s worth noting, that is how the developer has carefully selected the animals to feature in Wit-Fit. Instead of featuring classic favorites such as the mouse or the polar bear, Wit-Fit features unique animals such as a mosquito and a toad. It’s its way of promoting to kids that every living being is beautiful and deserving of love.
Things I Like
The game has intuitive controls. It’s very easy to complete a sentence by dragging words onto the missing word spots. Because you will only deal with a maximum of six missing words at a time, it's not impssoble for kids to complete the poems on their own.
Granted, they might need a few tries to successfully match all the words. But, I think it’s a great opportunity for them to learn how to read the signs provided by the illustrations. They also learn to focus on one sentence at a time, and find rhyming words.
I’d really love it if the developers would include a narration that will read the poems once it’s completed. A young boy’s or girl’s voice would make it the app engaging and even more fun. I’m sure many kids would love to try creating their own clever rhymes and witty poems once they hear the funny poems read out loud.
Wit-Fit is a fun app for kids ages 7+ to learn about rhyming words and short poems in English. Each poem is like a puzzle waiting to be solved. Using the illustrations as hints, kids learn how to associate words to complete a sentence while keeping everything in context. It truly is a fun little app for everyone in the family to enjoy clever rhymes and witty poems.
