A balanced diet is essential to help kids grow up healthy. The eating habits a child picks up in their early years can influence their lifestyle later in life, so it’s important to instill a healthy relationship with food from an early age.
This is where our app of the day comes in. Called This is my food - Nutrition for kids, it aims to get kids learning about food and nutrition, in an interactive way. Among others, they’ll discover where different foods come from, what happens to the food they eat, and how to grow their own herbs.
Nutrition for Kids
The app is split into several sections, and in each section you’ll be able to focus on a specific topic. But first, you’ll be asked to select a friend (avatar) whom you’ll be dining with. You’ll also be able to select if you want to see vegetarian meals only.
Once that’s done, you can swipe through various dishes, including rice and fish, meat and potatoes, pasta, and sandwiches. You can tap on each element in the dish to learn more about it, such as its nutritional contents and where it comes from.
Tapping on the meat skewer, for example, you’ll see a beef cut diagram that shows how almost the entire animal can be processed. If you want to learn more, you can tap on the button on the bottom left, which will bring up additional text about how different types of cattle are raised for different purposes.
Tapping on the knife-and-fork icon on the top left, you can access the other sections available in the app. For starters, you can go to My Garden, a journal feature that lets you keep track of your own real-life herb garden. You can add photos and record voice notes over the span of your garden’s growth. If you don’t know where to start, you can follow the simple instructions at the bottom.
The third section is called My Favorite. In this section you can create your perfect sandwich using various ingredients. You can even save the ingredient list for your masterpiece, to your Camera Roll.
In the section My Top 5, you can keep track of the foods that you’ve eaten. The list is pretty exhaustive, and covers all sorts of food from proteins to sweets. You can also note how you feel about each food by adding an appropriate emoticon.
The fifth section, titled Nutrition, is filled with all there is to know about food. Here you can learn why people eat, how to classify food, where food comes from, and that different people may have different eating habits. You’ll also be able to see how food travels through the digestive system, in an interactive diagram.
Parents Need to Know
This is my food - Nutrition for kids is designed for ages four and up. It’s mostly narrated, so beginning or non-readers should be able to follow along without any issues. The app is available in several languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
To extend learning at home, you can download the My Food handbook on developer’s website, which contains printable templates for making your own herb labels, food sheet, nutrition wheel, coloring pages, shopping list, and food-related games. In addition, the app also offers an Apple Watch app, which you can use to monitor your herb garden.
The app has no third-party ads and no in-app purchases. All links are secured behind a security question. No Internet access is required to play.
Things I Like
This is my food - Nutrition for kids is so far, the most comprehensive resource for learning about nutrition and food that I’ve ever encountered. In addition to basic knowledge about food, such as the nutrition wheel, it goes as far as to explain the differences between a vegetarian and a vegan, the importance of species-appropriate farming, and why we should try to eat seasonally and locally. All of this information is presented in a matter-of-fact way and in small chunks, which makes it easier to digest.
The app also offers lots of fun interactions and games that make learning easier. For example, an animated diagram allows you to learn how a fish is caught, delivered to the market, fileted, and then cooked to be eaten. In another activity, which happens to be my favorite, you must guess what is growing in a pot based on its stalk. Once you’ve made your guess, you can erase the pot to take a peek at the vegetable growing within.
Finally, the best thing about this app is it can easily be enjoyed by kids and grown-ups. Since making sure that our kids maintain a healthy diet is our responsibility as a parent, we too can benefit from learning about food and nutrition. Some of the app’s features, such as the food tracker, also make it easy for us to keep track of our kids’ eating habits.
This is my food - Nutrition for kids is a comprehensive and fun resource for kids to learn all about food and nutrition. This interactive app is loaded with fun facts, animated diagrams, and mini games that engage kids and even grown-ups.
