There certainly isn’t a shortage of animal apps on the App Store, but on the other hand we just can’t get enough of them. Cute Zoo ABC is the latest to entertain us.
True to its name, the app is a collection of adorable animal flashcards that represent the letters in the alphabet. When tapped, the animals will make sounds: a bark, a roar, or something imaginary but entertaining like the sound of waves.
The app designer, Sasha Zanjani, notes that the app is inspired by his son Zander, who always lets out a gentle scream when asked what noise an animal makes. The goal of the app is to introduce young kids to the fun sounds of the animal kingdom while teaching them their ABCs.
There are 26 animals in all — one for each letter in the alphabet. You can go through them the conservative way, which is by swiping through all the available cards. Alternatively, you can shake the device to get a random letter selection, or swipe up to bring up the index and select a letter/animal you want.
What I love about the app is how it looks: like a stylish picture book. The fact that you can learn what each animal sounds like is appealing, especially for young kids. I’d also like to note that visual and audio feedback are given for the letters, and can be set to either UK or US English.
Like all good apps designed with kids in mind, Cute Zoo ABC has no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases to worry about. If you wish, you can lock the screen during narration to stop kids from accidentally moving on to the next animal.
