There are many reasons to love fall: the crisp weather, the beautiful colors, and the abundance of pies and pumpkin spice lattes. It’s also a great time to be outdoor and go leaf-hunting with your kids. You can then use your bounty to recreate these beautiful fall leaf crafts as seen in Labo Leaves.
Combine Shapes and Colors
Labo Leaves is the latest release from Labo Lado, an app maker renowned for their fun and creative toys apps. In the app, kids will learn to create artful crafts using leaves of various colors, shapes, and sizes. All the while, they’ll be practicing their fine motor skills.
The app offers 18 craft templates, including animals and people. Among others, you’ll find a butterfly, giraffe, cow, leaf-men band, balloon peddler, and a circus clown. Each template is arranged like a puzzle where you drag the leaves from the bottom of the screen onto their designated spots. When completed, the crafts will come alive and interactive.
For example, after completing the leaf-men band you can tap each member to hear them play their instrument. In another template, you can watch a cow get abducted by a UFO. Each template is silly in their own way, but all equally entertaining.
Parents Need to Know
Labo Leaves is designed for ages 3-7. Like past Labo apps, it encourages open-ended play with no time limit and no scoring system. It has neither text nor audio narration, which makes it suitable for young children.
The app has no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases. You don’t need an Internet connection to use the app.
Things I Like
What’s great about Labo Leaves — and other Labo Lado apps before it — is it teaches kids to create art from everyday objects. This encourages kids to think outside the box and imagine new uses for things they might have taken from granted. The crafts are also simple enough to recreate at home, which allows the learning process to be extended into the real world.
From an educational perspective, Labo Leaves offer young kids with the opportunity to build basic skills such as fine motor skills and shape recognition. I like how hints are provided subtly in the form of glowing borders where a leaf is supposed to go. The templates also vary in difficulty to provide enough challenges for every age.
Like all Labo Lado apps, Labo Leaves has an easy-to-use interface, cute graphics, and low-key soundtrack. There’s a nice detail in the main menu where templates will have pixelized thumbnails, leaving you to guess what object you’ll make. Once the template has been completed, its thumbnail will be displayed clearly.
Labo Leaves features 18 creative leaf crafts that you can replicate at home. Upon completion, each craft comes alive with a silly animation that is sure to draw giggles. In addition to providing kids with a fun activity for the fall season, it helps with basic skills such as fine motor skills and shape recognition. Recommended for ages 3+.
