Learning to count and identifying numbers are the foundation to learning math. If your child is starting to build their skills then this app might be helpful for them: Number Train. It offers mini games to help preschool kids learn how to read and write the numbers from 1 to 20.
All Aboard the Number Train
When you open the app, you’ll be presented with a brightly colored train. Each of the train’s car is marked with a number, and in all there are 20 cars to represent the numbers from 1 to 20. Tapping on a car will take you through six rounds of mini games.
The format of the games is the same for every number. First, the number is introduced with sound. A set of objects will also appear as a visual representation of the quantity; when you tap car number 3, for example, you’ll see three little pigs.
In the second game, you’ll learn to trace the number by following the outline and the key points provided by the app. Upon completion, you’ll be rewarded with stars based on your performance.
The third game helps you gain a sense of a number’s value by dragging marbles into a box. You’ll have to calculate the number by yourself and when you think you have it right, tap the checkmark to check your answer. Only then will the app count the marbles for you.
The fourth and fifth games are designed to help you understand sequence. In the former game, you’ll swipe to highlight the correct number of blocks. Then, in the latter game, you’ll try to put the numbered blocks in the correct order.
In the final game, you’ll be tested about your understanding of number values. Two dominoes will be presented, and you must choose the one that contains a specific number of dots. After this task has been completed, you can choose a sticker for decorating your car.
Parents Need to Know
According to the developer, Number Train is designed to adhere to US Common Core State Standards and the UK Early Learning Foundation Stage Principles. It also follows the Montessori approach to learning numbers. All the games are designed to be easy to use for young kids.
A notable feature of the app is the “grown-ups” section, which shows the child’s statistics and how well they’ve learned each number. The section also includes an overview of each activity and its purposes.
Number Train is available in several languages, namely English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Russian. We tested the school edition, which is paid upfront and doesn’t contain third-party advertising and in-app purchases. But if you want to try out the app before deciding to purchase, there’s also a free version that includes a few numbers.
