As far as nursery rhymes go, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is one of the most popular there is. Most English-speaking juniors are likely to learn about the song at some point of their lives, so it is no surprise that there are many adaptations of the song out there. A popular example is this music video by Super Simple Learning, which has a whopping 273 million views.
Well, taking note of the video’s success, the developers have now released an app version of the song. Called Twinkle Twinkle, it includes a short interactive bedtime story, a music video, and a counting game.
Opening the app, you have the choice to access the story, music video, or counting game. Both the story and music video tell of the friendship between a restless owl and a friendly star in the night sky, however the story is more elaborate with subtle interactive elements; for example, touch the owl to make it blink, or the star to make it twinkle.
Like many digital books nowadays, the story comes with multiple reading modes: Read to Me, in which a narrator reads the story while you explore the pages; Read Myself, with no audio assistance from the app; and Auto-Play, in which the app reads and moves through the story without you having to do anything. You can also choose an adult voice or a child voice to narrate the story for you.
The included music video is the same one also uploaded on YouTube, and features cute, 3D graphics. There is also a simple counting game in which juniors learn to count 1–20 by tapping the stars on the screen.
Parents Need to Know
Twinkle Twinkle is a simple app suitable for young juniors ages 2-5. Because the app is pretty low-key, it is perfect for bedtime or naps. There is also a nice feature for recording your own narration for the story, which allows parents or grandparents to add a little personal touch in the app.
In addition to being entertaining, the app is also educational. The counting game, while super simple, is pretty helpful for learning to count small numbers.

Things I Like
This is a cute app that works well despite its simplicity. It takes a popular song, and turns it into a child-friendly animated short which delights and pleases young juniors. The characters are especially adorable — I’m sure many juniors would love them.
I like that the app uses subtle interactive elements in its story, making it suitable for use before bedtime. The low-key animations and sound effects also make the app a good starter for young juniors who are only learning to use the iPad.
Besides the beautiful 3D graphics, the narration/voiceover is what makes the app special for me. I like how you can switch between an adult or a child voice in both the story and the song. Either way, the narration is clear, calm, and fitting for the app’s theme.
Twinkle Twinkle is a cute little app that makes a perfect bedtime companion. It features three modes in one: a heartwarming story, an adorable music video, and a simple counting game. It is soothing, with beautiful graphics, subtle interactive elements, as well as adorable characters. Highly recommended.
