Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions

Calling all adventurers! We have a great app for you today. Entitled Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions, this nature themed app will send you off on an exciting and educational trip to Africa.

Wild.Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions introduces juniors to Lars the Lion and his pride.

A Wild Adventure

Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is the first in a series of apps produced by the editors of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine, a US-based children nature publication. Working together with Moonbot Studios, whose previous app The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore we absolutely loved, the collaboration resulted in an interactive, activity-filled app that will excite you to learn more about the "kings of the grasslands".

Guided by Ricky Raccoon and Lars the Lion, Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions takes you on a tour around the grasslands of Africa where Lars' pride live, play and hunt. The app is split into three sections: Explore, Play and Create.

In Explore, you follow Lars' footprints to discover interesting facts about lions and their habitat. These details are presented in small bits through the mascots' knowledgeable commentaries as well as humorous animated infographics. For instance, did you know that a lion is slightly smaller than a tiger, which can weight as much as 12 first graders? I sure didn't!

In addition to learning about these lion tales, you can look at beautiful photographs, flip through slideshows and watch footages of lions in the wild. Also be on the lookout for hidden treasure chests and the elusive Sammy Skunk as they will reward you with stickers upon discovery.

The Play section contains all five mini games that you can also find in the Explore section. The first game, Jigsaw Puzzle, asks you to piece together several animal photos. In What's Wrong with this Picture, you tap on the things that are out of place in the grasslands.

Photo Safari is an interesting game that utilizes the iPad's gyroscope feature by spinning around 360 degrees to take photographs of lions in the wild. In Hide and Seek, you help a lioness find her playful cubs that are hidden in the scene. Finally, Sound Match is a game of guessing which animal produce a specific sound.

The third section, Create, contains four activities that encourage you to get creative. First, there's a Sticker Board in which you can arrange the stickers that you have collected to compose a lively scene. You can also play really wild tunes on the Animal Piano, create odd animal hybrids in Animal Builder and compose silly stories in Trail Tales.

Informative.Animated infographics deliver interesting lion facts in a fun, junior-friendly way.

Gameplay Video

While I could go on and on to explain the app, here's an official video to help you get an idea of the things that you can do:

Parents Need to Know

Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is a great educational app filled with engaging multimedia content. Aimed at juniors aged 4-7, the activities cater to a broad skill set. For example, Photo Safari requires motor skills, while What's Wrong with this Picture involves object association.

Designed with kids in mind, the app features loveable mascots that patiently guide juniors as they play. It is also worth noting that although the app is based on Ranger Rick Jr. magazine, you don't need to be familiar with the publication to fully enjoy it.

Create. In Animal Builder, you can mix and match different animal body parts to create a unique hybrid.

Things I Like

As a person who likes learning about animals, I thought that Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is a fantastic app to get juniors interested in nature and wildlife. I am impressed by the great amount of educational content included, and even more by the way that they are presented. By using a mixture of different media, the app really knows how to deliver scientific facts in a fun, junior-friendly way.

One of my favorite part of the app is the use of interactive infographics. For example, in the side-by-side comparison between a lion's day to a kid's, I like how you can turn the hands of a clock and watch how the lion and the child spend their days.

Next, I also like how the app provides both a Play section and a Create section. The games in the Play section are tons of fun - my favorites are Sound Match and Photo Safari - but the activities in Create really invite you to be imaginative. I'm guessing that many juniors would spend a lot of time (perhaps much to their parents' dismay) tapping away on the Animal Piano to play really wild music. The Animal Builder is also a great activity for older juniors.

Sounds. In Sound Match, learn about the sounds that different animals make.

Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions is fantastic and educational app for kids who love animals and nature. With many interesting facts to learn, games to play and other activities to get involved in, this app will keep juniors busy for at least a couple of hours. I highly recommend it.
