As a parent, I can testify that most toddlers have great interest in anything musical. Ever since I bought my iPad 2 on its release day, musical apps are the ones that survived each time I had to free up some space on the device.
In order for a musical app to be appealing to toddlers, they must also be interactive. Based on my personal experience, finding musical apps that can provide excellent songs and a great level of interactivity is not an easy thing to do.
Please Don't Stop the Music
Little Fox Music Box is a fantastic musical app that offers three nursery rhymes captioned in English or German. There is a karaoke mode where you turn off the voiceover and sing along to the music. Beautiful and interactive illustrations by Oscar-nominated illustrator Heidi Willtinger accompany your toddlers as they enjoy these old favorites: Old Mac Donald Had a Farm, London Bridge and Evening Song.
Things I Like
First, the illustrations are drop dead gorgeous. This reason alone makes the app worth purchasing.
Second, the app has a lot of interactivity built into it. Almost anything that you tap or smear will animate beautifully. The attention to details is such an enjoyment to see. It is almost like you're enjoying a high-quality animated short film.
It is interesting to note that each scene has multiple layers and allows multiple animations to happen at the same time. For instance, in Old Mac Donald Had a Farm, you can watch as different sets of animations and illustrations roll in to represent the four seasons.
Finally, the app also includes an exciting tree house music studio where you can tap on various animals and items inside the tree house to create your own songs. My son Philip really enjoys this part of the app because he can experiment with different sounds.
I have tried a lot of musical apps, and I personally think that Little Fox Music Box is the most beautiful out there. It has great interactivity and a nice set of songs. Looking at the app, you can tell that the developers put a lot of care and attention into their design. My only wish would be for the app to have more than three songs. Nevertheless, it's a great app which I would highly recommend.
