Read the Secret History of Chess and Learn How to Become a Chess Master

Where does chess originate from? Some people believe it’s from India. I honestly don’t know, but I think some historical context might be helpful if you want to introduce the game to your kids.

Mark Price, father of two girls, decided to write a fictional story for his daughters to tell the history of chess. The story is called The Foolish King, and it is set in a magical land where kings and dragons still rule the world. You can buy the hardcover version of the book on Amazon as soon as it’s released. But, you can definitely give the iPad app a try, because it is available today.

The Foolish King

The book is divided into 15 chapters, where the first four chapters are used to set up the main characters and the background story. The kingdom of Stur is the location where the fairy tale is told. King Marra and his advisor, Woogle the Owl, rule the kingdom wisely. The king and his people love to grow plants, and compete to see who can grow the largest and juiciest pear.

Play, Learn, and Sing-Along with 20 Nursery Rhymes in HooplaKidz Nursery Rhymes Activities

Play, Learn, and Sing-Along with 20 Nursery Rhymes in HooplaKidz Nursery Rhymes Activities

You've probably caught me saying many times that kids learn best when they’re playing and having fun. If they’re singing along, that would double the fun. That’s why I think toddlers aged 3 and up would have a great time playing the HooplaKidz Nursery Rhymes Activities app.

The app features 20 nursery rhymes. There is a game for each song so kids can play as they listen and sing along. This is simply the best way for toddlers to have fun while improving their skills at the same time.

Play the Games and Sing Along

The main menu shows all the songs in a scrollable image. Kids can select any song they like, and they will be taken to the game for that song. For example, choosing the ABC Song will take them to a game where they match letters of the alphabet as instructed by the narration. In another example, the song Pop Goes the Weasel has a game where kids trace an underground route to the weasel while collecting fruits along the way.

Play Phonics-based Spelling Games in Trilo Spelling and Unveil Magical Storylines Involving Magical Creatures

Learning to spell can be boring for some kids. That's why I welcome any kind of spelling games with a fresh approach. One app that I recently discovered and liked is Trilo Spelling. In the app, kids solve phonics-based challenges to unveil magical stories.

Solve Challenges, Gain Plane Fuels, Collect Puzzle Pieces, and Unveil the Magical Stories

In Trilo Spelling, kids play as a funny zombie named Frank, and are accompanied by Spooka the friendly ghost. After selecting a difficulty level, they will jump straight into the enchanting world of Trilo to solve challenges, gain plane fuels, and collect puzzle pieces.

Each level contains 5 different games, and each game has 10 challenges. Solving each challenge allows kids to collect plane fuel. When they have enough plane fuel, they can fly to the next part of the island to collect puzzle pieces. Once they have gathered all the pieces, they will learn of the story behind the puzzle.

Rescue the Goldfish in Busy Water: A New Pipe-Connecting Puzzle Game from Edoki

Looking for a new game on the App Store is not always a pleasant experience, especially if you’re looking for a suitable game for your kids: one with no third-party ads, in-app purchases, or unnecessary use of the Internet. That’s why we pay close attention when a well-known kids’ app developer creates a game for kids.

My game pick for today is Busy Water. It’s a brand new puzzle game from developer Edoki, where you connect water pipes of different shapes and manipulate water to help a fish get back into its tank. The concept is fairly simple to grasp, but it makes for a fun and addictive playing experience.

Steer the Fish to Safety

You start by learning the basic gestures in the game: tap to turn the pipe and drag to move or attach it to another pipe. Once you have the hang of it, you will encounter a level that forces you to rotate the device upside down to solve the puzzle. Soon afterwards, you’ll learn that you can tilt and/or rotate your device to control gravity, and thus decide where the fish and water will go.

Learn Letters of the Alphabet as You Watch These Hilarious Magical Shows

Learning should be fun. Especially if the subject is as crucial as learning the letters of the alphabet. Many apps have been developed to introduce toddlers ages 1+ to this topic, and almost all of them offer fun and unique gameplay. The Magical Alphabet app offers sample words for each letter that are connected to form a story.

Meet Pom-Pom the Magician

What is the relationship between a balloon and a bee? What can happen between a unicycle and an umbrella?

If you’re wondering what kind of story would involve seemingly unrelated objects and/or animals, come and meet Pom-Pom the Magician. Throughout the app, you can watch videos of him performing a magic show that unveils the story behind these objects.
