Short stories are a great way to promote literacy and a love for reading. If you're out of short stories to read with your kids, here is one that I recently discovered and loved: So Many Butts! Made by the same team that made Tiny Great True Stories, it's an adorable tale about forest animals.

Befriend the Forest Animals

In this interactive book-app, Little Squirrel discovers that something big is happening in the forest as more and more animals begin gathering at the Rabbits' house. Unfortunately for him, he can't see what is happening because all of them are standing in front of him. Will he ever find out just what is going on?

Developed for ages 5 and under, the So Many Butts! app includes several exciting features. For example, kids can interact with the characters on screen simply by tapping on them. There is also a catchy music video, featuring illustrations from the book, that kids can sing and dance along to.

Additionally, kids can play two different mini games. The first is a memory game, in which they try to find pairs of cards. The second is a funny quiz where they are shown a picture of a butt and attempt to guess which animal it belongs to. There is no timer or high score, so it's all about having fun.

Parents Need to Know

So Many Butts! is available in English and Portuguese. You can change the app's language from the main screen, by tapping on the button on the top left. Once tapped, it takes a second or two for the app to reload the contents in your selected language.

The story itself is narrated by a child. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off, although the Parents' section mentions that it is possible. You can hide or show the text on each page.

The app has no third-party ads, no in-app purchases, and no external links. It's available for iPhone and iPad. The iTunes listing has screenshots that contain grammatical errors (the mini game is incorrectly marked "Who's butt is this?" instead of "Whose Butt is this?") but rest assured, they aren't present in the app.

Things I Like

So Many Butts! is a short and entertaining story that delights young kids. Not only will they giggle at the sight of various animals shaking their butts, but they will also enjoy learning the names of each animal. They will also be able to relate to the Little Squirrel, who is small, curious, and observant.

The app, with its gorgeous illustrations and animations, is quite lovely to behold. There is enough interactivity to keep kids engaged but not too much to distract from the story. The narration is also crystal clear, but I wish I could record myself reading the story just like in Tiny Great True Stories.

Conclusion

Overall, So Many Butts! is great. It's the perfect length for young kids, and it has no scary elements or conflicts. The mini games and music video also make a nice reward for finishing the story. Highly recommended if you're looking for a nice bedtime story for your kids.
