The 2016 Summer Games may be over, but you can keep the excitement going at home with Fiete Sports. It's a fun, Olympic-style sports app for kids, featuring the ever-lovable sailor Fiete and his quirky crew.
Ready, Set, Go
In Fiete Sports, kids help the sailor Fiete as he competes with his friends. They choose from a variety of events, like running, swimming, volleyball, archery, and many more. At the end of each event, they earn medals based on their performance.
The controls are fairly simple: most of the time, kids only need to tap repeatedly or drag their finger around the screen to get Fiete moving. Some sports, like shot put and archery, requires kids to pull back with their finger—like a slingshot—and release it at the proper time to shoot the ball into the air.
The app includes 13 sports in all. When you download the app, you get five sports for free: swimming, cycling, hurdles, running, and shot put. Eight additional sports are available via a one-time in-app purchase.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Fiete Sports is recommended for kids under five years of age. It's simple to use, and requires no reading. Even though kids earn medals based on their performance, there isn't a pressure to compete. They can repeat each game until they get the gold medal, or they can move on to other games that they like.
The app has no third-party advert, and doesn't require Internet connection to play. More apps by the same developers are available behind a parental gate.
Things I Like
Fiete Sports, like any other Fiete app, is beautifully made. When you open the app, you are greeted with a colorful panorama of mountains, oceans, and famous landmarks from around the world. There is an upbeat music that plays in the background, creating a lively atmosphere.
The games are also fun to play. They might not be what older players are looking for, but they are quite entertaining for preschool-aged kids. Plus, they help kids develop better hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and timing.
As it is, I think the app has a good selection of sports. What I'd love to see is a multiplayer mode, so kids can compete with their family and friends. I think this would make the app more fun to play together, and prolong its shelf life.
Fiete Sports is a excellent app to introduce your kids to the summer games and sports in general. The games are definitely fun for young kids, and it's exciting to try and win gold medals for each sport. Gorgeous graphics and quirky characters also help make the app even more engaging.
