Many kids aged two or three are afraid of the dark. As their imagination flourishes and the number of things unfamiliar to them begins to grow, they might be convinced that monsters are lurking in the shadows and ready to pounce when the light goes out.

Even though fear of the dark is a normal part of development, it may disturb the child's sleeping habits if left unchecked. A practical solution is to establish a relaxing and enjoyable bedtime routine to reduce anxiety.

Comomola Fireflies is an app that was made for this purpose. Available now for iPhone and iPad, it offers interactive stories that help kids overcome their fear of dark with silhouettes, soft lights, and calming routines.

Remember to Turn on the Light

It's time to sleep but little Amy doesn't want to turn off the lights because she is afraid of the dark. Fortunately, her adorable stuffed toys want to help her overcome her fear. When a toy is tapped, kids are transported to one of 6 unique locations: a farm, a magical forest, the roofs of Paris, a camping site, and even the snowy mountains.

Each location looks dark and scary at first glance, but when the light is turned on, unexpected surprises are revealed. The menacing silhouette on the rooftop turns out to be a pair of sleeping birds, the eyes glowing in the dark belong to a cute fox, and the scary figure in the distance is really a friendly Yeti who loves to snowboard. As kids explore the scene, a narrator tells the story of how Amy's little toy manages to deal with their fear.

Once kids have found all the hidden animations in a location, they can tap the button on the top left to go back to Amy's room. They can then choose a new stuffed toy and explore a new location. When they have visited all six locations, Amy will no longer be afraid of the dark. Kids can then turn off the lights in her room, and she will fall asleep.

Things I Like

Comomola Fireflies shows that the dark is not something to be terrified of. The app is gentle in its approach, allowing kids to set their own pace and discover for themselves the real form of the scary figures in the shadows. This allows kids to take control of their emotions and subdue their fear.

A welcome app for bedtime, Comomola Fireflies has a soothing ambience. You can even leave the musical-box soundtrack on to lull your little ones to sleep! The art also looks really nice.

When the scene is lit, kids can explore to discover fun surprises that reinforce the concept that the dark is not something to be feared
