Have you ever wondered what it is like to live in a fairytale? Step into the wintry world of Wuwu & Co. and take a look. The app, available in four languages, combines classical slow-telling literature with virtual reality to present an immersive reading experience. Simply pick up your device to get started.

Enter the Little Red House

At first glance, Wuwu & Co. doesn’t look any different from any other book app. But when you pick up the device the story comes to life in a most surprising way. The app becomes a virtual window, and you can turn your device in a 360-degree angle to move around within the story.

The story’s setting is a wintry forest filled with curious creatures. It is the coldest winter in two thousand years, and five friendly creatures have come to the cozy Little Red House to look for help. You tap each creature to find out about their predicament, then follow the instructions to assist them.

In one story, you are tasked to shake the snow off a pinecone tree by literally shaking your device. In another story, you are requested to shout to wake the creatures sleeping in a tree. Other interesting tasks involve finding specific colors with the device’s camera and following a trail of matchsticks to find a lost matchbox.

At the end of each story, you can go back to the Little Red House to explore more stories or just admire its cozy interior. The friends whom you have helped will have their pictures displayed on the wall, but you can revisit their story any time.

Parents Need to Know

Upon opening the app, you can choose whether you want to read the story by yourself or have it read to you. You can also choose to continue reading from where you left off or restart the story. If you want to change the language, tap the More button. The app is available in English, French, German, and Spanish.

One thing you should know is that while the app has no in-app purchases or third-party adverts, it does prompt you to leave a review on the App Store. The link to the App Store is not protected by a parental gate, so you might want to run through the app first before handing it over to your child.

Things I Like

Wuwu & Co. is highly interactive. Whereas most storybooks encourage the reader to sit down, Wuwu & Co. wants them to move. So don’t be surprised to see your kids twirling around or shouting at the device when they’re using the app. What’s even nicer is that you can share this magical experience with your family and friends, because you don’t need a virtual reality headset to get the immersive effect.

The narrative itself is quite charming, and littered with fantasy elements that kids will adore. The characters are truly odd and imaginative, for example, the character Everett is a half-pig, half-butterfly who migrates to Africa for the winter. The hand-drawn illustrations, which feature splashes of bright colors against black and white backgrounds, also add to that “Nordic folk tale” look.

Once the app is in VR mode, kids interact with the story by using the device in various ways. In this story, they must shout at the screen to wake the Everett siblings.

Conclusion

The combination of hand-drawn artwork, atmospheric sound effects, narrative, and interactivity really set Wuwu & Co. apart. This charming compilation of short stories makes clever use of the device’s features to create an immersive reading experience that kids will enjoy. Because it doesn’t require a special VR headset, it can be enjoyed together with family and friends. Highly recommended for ages 4 and up.
