Summer is the perfect time for kids to try their hands at arts and crafts. If you’re worried about the mess, digital art is a hassle-free option that offers just as much fun. For example, with the new The Very Hungry Caterpillar — Creative Play app from StoryToys, kids can create beautiful collages in the style of Eric Carle.
Create Your Own Collages
Inspired by Eric Carle’s love of bright colors and unique art style, The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Creative Play offers 40 textures and papers that can be cut and pieced together to create beautiful collages. The app also includes a range of templates from Eric Carle’s best-selling books, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, The Mixed Up Chameleon, Mister Seahorse, and many more. Or if your child is feeling particularly bold, they can start with a blank template and let their imagination run wild.
The workflow to create an artwork in the app is simple: first, select the paper you want from the swatches on top of the screen. Then, kids trace the desired shape with their finger to cut it. A dotted line will appear to help them to close the loop so they never feel lost.
Once the shapes have been cut out, they can be arranged or moved around the screen. The app makes it easy to move multiple shapes at once, using simple touch gestures. For example, kids can double tap to select all the objects on screen. They can also delete, rotate, and change the stack order of each shape.
In addition to a range of textures and papers, the app includes a drawing kit with two drawing tools (a paintbrush and pencil) and a range of colors. Kids can use this kit to add details to their collages. Then, once they are happy with their masterpiece, they can save it to the gallery to show off to their family and friends.
Parents Need to Know
Officially, the app geared towards kids ages 5 and under but it’s also great for older artists. Even though the interface and tools are fairly simple, you can create incredibly detailed pieces with them. The app is compatible with the Apple Pencil on iPad Pro, and features full support for Force Touch on relevant devices. That said, it works just as well with fingers.
The app is child-friendly. It has no in-app purchases or third-party advertising, and can be used without an Internet connection.
