In the Adventures of Pan, readers follow a feisty panda bear as she tries to find her long lost parents

You might remember our review from a couple of years back about the Adventures of Pan, the first-ever original storybook series created exclusively for iPhone and iPad. Aimed toward readers between 6-8 years old, the series feature a whimsical story, unique characters, and great interactivity. It has been featured by Apple as one of their “Best New Apps” and “Essential Apps for Kids”.

Last month, the critically acclaimed series saw its seventh and final chapter released. Called Pan: Han Awakening, the chapter concludes the exciting adventures of the panda bear named Pan.

Read on for our review of the whole series, plus a giveaway at the end of this post.

The Adventures of Pan

The Adventures of Pan follows the adventures of a fearless but reckless panda named Pandora as she searches for her long lost parents. She is accompanied by Chase, a hard-headed warrior bunny, and Locke, an anxious but loyal inventor fox who is eager to prove himself at the Capitol Games. The trio learns that Pan’s parents were captured while trying to stop an ancient evil, and must band together to save the day while learning about Pan’s newly awakened magic power.

Created specifically for digital devices, the Adventures of Pan includes more than 100 interactive scenes that capture the attention of its young readers. Each page allows readers to touch, swipe, and even tilt to discover fun surprises. For example, in the Book 1: the Fearless Beribolt, readers help Pan throw boomerangs to dissolve as many clouds as possible. What’s nice is that many of these interactions actually move the story forward rather than a flashy distraction.

In addition to cinematic animations, the stories include high-quality narration and text highlighting on every page. Readers can also tap on each character several times to access additional dialogs. Do note that the narration moves rather quickly so it is more suitable for older kids, which are the app’s target audience.

Things I Like

The Adventures of Pan is a fantastic series for kids who love adventure stories. It’s packed with interactive features and gorgeous artwork that really bring the story to life. Both kids and grown-ups will be delighted by the surprises on each page, many of which reference famous movies (“Wilson, I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”), songs, and pop culture icons. For example, there’s a scene in Book 2 where you can dress Pan as Katniss Everdeen.

The story itself has a nice pace and incorporates values such as the importance of family, friendship, and bravery. I personally love that the main character is a feisty female panda, but the rest of the cast are just as interesting. Overall, this is a gender-neutral story that equally appeals to boys and girls.

What I’d love to see in the app is the ability to turn off the narration so that kids can read the story on their own. I also encountered several crashes while testing the app but fortunately you can jump to a specific page so it wasn’t much of a problem.

There are lots of interactions throughout the book, and many of them actually advance the story. Here, readers must tap the flint to help Pan and Chase start a fire.

Conclusion

The Adventures of Pan is a well made app with gorgeous graphics and lots of fun interactive features, excellent writing and narration, and lovable characters that will keep readers invested in the story. Kids ages 6-8 will benefit the most from the app, but younger kids can also enjoy it with some help from grown-ups. It’s a great series that I highly recommend.

If you’re interested in joining the adventure, The Adventures of Pan app contains all seven books in the series at a reduced price so it’s very convenient.
