The alphabet is one of the first things kids need to master before they start learning to read. There are many apps to help them with the task, but the Elastic Alphabets app is one of the better ones I have seen so far. It’s a comprehensive app that teaches kids the alphabet using hundreds of engaging animations and fun sound effects.

Learn the ABCs with 750+ Animations

In the app Elastic Alphabets, kids explore the 26 letters of the alphabet together with the friendly character Gigi. They can go through the letters in order (A-Z) or they can choose any letter they want from the selection screen. Each letter is introduced by name and sound. If the letter is tapped, the app shows how to write it with the use of guide arrows.

Next, kids tap on the arrows on the bottom to discover the words that are associated with the letter. For example, Z is for zigzag, zip, and zebra. Each word is accompanied by pictures and animations, which are triggered with a simple tap. At least three animations are available for each word, and 750+ animations throughout the app. The order of which the animations appear is random, thus there is an element of surprise every time kids use the app.

Designed for small children, most of the words in the app have short vowels and are perfect for early learning. It should be noted that some words may not begin with the selected letter, but are still chosen because they accurately represent a letter sound. For example, the letter X has the associated words “fox” and “box”.

Parents Need to Know

Elastic Alphabets is child-friendly. It has no in-app purchases or third-party adverts that hinder the learning experience. There is a protected section from which grown-ups can customize the game, for example, with upper or lowercase letters or with the sounds turned off.

The app has a simple and easy-to-use interface, which allows kids to play with minimal help from a grown-up. Narration is also included throughout the app to assist with learning. Hints are provided when the child is idle for too long, for instance, by asking the child to “swipe down” on the screen.

Things I Like

Elastic Alphabets is an excellent choice for kids who are just learning their alphabet. In this fun-filled app, each letter is presented alongside illustrations and concepts that kids can easily relate to. At least two words are available for each letter so kids can develop a diverse vocabulary.

Many of the animations are simply entertaining to watch, for example, the letter A that transforms into an apple, then an arrow and an airplane. Some animations even chain together to tell a story: a fly gets eaten by a frog, which turns into a fish as it jumps into the water. Even though the artwork style is simple, the transition between each animation is seamless and well designed. The sound effects are also on point.

A suggestion I have for the developer is to include a tracing activity so that kids could learn how to write each letter. I would also love it if more words were added to extend the app’s shelf life even more.

Conclusion

Overall, Elastic Alphabets is a terrific app to help kids learn the letters of the alphabet. With hundreds of silly animations to discover, it successfully motivates kids to learn. I highly recommend it for ages 2 and up.
