Wee Trains lets you build your own toy trains and solve problems along different terrains.

Boys love to play with toy trains, regardless whether it’s a physical toy train or a train app on the iPad. Having three boys at home has confirmed this for me. That’s why we’re really excited to play with Wee Taps’ latest app: Wee Trains.

Wee Trains offers a way for kids to paint and decorate their own toy trains — by choosing from the various toy train shapes — before taking them on a journey across various terrains.

Choose the Locomotive, the Carts, and the Track

From the main menu, you can either start driving the toy trains or customize your own. If you choose to customize your own toy train, you’d see a screen with a palette of colors, two brush sizes, and an eraser. You can also add a bunch of stickers onto your train. Once you’re finished, you can take a picture of your creation and save it for later use in the driving mode.

The game includes many different kinds of locomotives that you can choose from. They are grouped by category, for example, numbers, animals, and more. All of your custom locomotives will be shown in the first category.

Once you have selected your locomotive, you can choose the carts. Each locomotive will pull three carts behind it. The carts are also grouped by category, such as animals, shapes, numbers, music, people, and water pipes. You can select carts from different categories or from the same category. You can also select the exact same carts three times, if you want to. These carts will decide the kinds of problems that you will be solving later in the game.

Next, you choose the world that you want to drive in. You start with three worlds, but you can unlock more as you earn more tickets. As your train chugs along, you will solve various problems. For example, dragging a bridge over water to ensure the train can cross over. You might also be tasked to pick up the correct passenger, or play with the water pipes puzzle. Other game plays include repeating musical tunes, finding similar shapes, collecting coins equal to the shown number, clearing leaves off the track, and waiting for a rocket to launch.

Remember that the more tickets you collect, the better your chance to unlock new carts, locomotives, and tracks.

Parents Need to Know

Wee Trains offers a fun activity for kids ages 3+ who love to play with toy train. The game is designed so that the more you play, the better the game gets. Each time you take your train for a ride, you have the chance to collect tickets along the way. These tickets will be used to unlock new locomotives, carts, and tracks.

That said, the app does allow you to bypass these item locks. If you wish to let your child play with all the items from the start, you can go to your device’s Settings menu and select the option to unlock all items.

The app works great without an Internet connection. It doesn’t have any third party ads, in-app purchases, or links to social networks.

Things I Like

Playing with toy trains is all about having fun. And, Wee Trains is really fun to play with. Even though you can't really drive the toy train, you can customize a lot of things about the train, collect tickets, and solve various problems along the way.

My favorite gameplay in Wee Trains is the pipes puzzle. You won't be solving real pipes puzzles here, but it's enough to introduce kids to the genre.

Make sure you try all the different locomotives, carts, and tracks. Even without including the custom trains, there are already plenty of combinations that you can try with the built-in locomotives and carts. And, driving through land and underwater offers a different kind of fun.

Wee Trains includes various mini games -- including this introduction to the water pipes puzzles genre.

Conclusion

Wee Trains is a must-have for any kids who love to play with their toy trains. In addition to customizing the looks of their toy locomotives with color paints and stickers, they can also unlock new locomotives and carts by playing, solving problems, and collecting tickets. Kids can also learn about basic counting, shape-recognizing, and problem solving. It really is a fun and educational game for kids ages 3+.
