How many times have you seen two or more kids playing on a single iPad? On the other hand, how many times have you seen them fighting over an iPad? The latter is probably a more common scenario in many households.

Even though the iPad is meant for sharing, most apps for kids are designed to be played by one person at a time. I believe we need more multiplayer games for kids on the iPad. For example, games like Fun on the Farm, which offers great 2-player games for kids.

The Classic Games

There are 5 games included in Fun on the Farm. Three of them are based on classic games: Lotto, dominoes, and air hockey. The other two are new, original games called Color Tiles and Pass and Play (Dice Game). The games are unlocked one at a time; the first one you can play is Lotto.

If you’re not familiar with Lotto, it’s a game where two players try to match their cards with the Lotto cards randomly dealt at the center. If a match is made, the player gets to remove the matching card from their hand. The winner is the first person to successfully clear all six cards.

At the beginning of each game, players can select their respective avatars and preferred card face. Three faces are available: fruits, animals, or numbers. In the air hockey game, players can also choose to play for 5, 10, or 15 points.

The New Games

The Pass and Play game looks like your standard pass-and-play dice game, but it has the elements of snakes and ladders. There are three tile types that can affect the player’s path: -1, +1, and STOP. For example, stopping on a -1 will cause the player to move one step back, while stopping on a +1 will cause him to move one step forward.

What makes the game interesting is there is no standard 1-6 die; instead, a roulette wheel is spun to determine the player’s path. If the wheel stops on -1, for example, the player will be moved to the closest -1 tile. It’s unconventional, but it works well.

In the Color Tiles game, players start from opposing corners and create paths by conquering their adjacent tiles. After choosing a color — preferably an adjacent one — they get to move to all the adjacent tiles with that color. This way, the player’s area gets larger with their every move. The winner is the one with the largest area at the end of the game.

My favorite game in Fun on the Farm is the strategic hexagon color tiles game.

Parents Need to Know

Fun on the Farm is suitable for ages 4+. Technically you can play the games in the app alone (by playing both sides), but they are best played by two players. This makes the app suitable for parties, family game nights, road trips, or sleepovers.

Fun on the Farm works great without Internet connection. It doesn’t have any third-party ads, in-app purchases, or links to social networks.

Fun on the Farm offers a child-friendly way to play dominoes. You can change the tile faces, too.

Things I Like

Fun of the Farm has a unique implementation of the classic domino game. Both players get to see their opponent’s hands, so they can figure out their best moves. This encourages players to think strategically, and at the same time makes it easier for younger kids to pick up the game.

The one game that I love the most is the hexagon color tiles game. My suggestion is to play aggressively to conquer the center of the game board. This allows you to push your opponent to smaller area on their subsequent moves. It’s a really strategic game that is easy enough for kids to understand.

Conclusion

If your kids love to play multiplayer board games, Fun on the Farm is a must-have. All the games are designed to be played by two players. While three games are luck-based, the other two reply on strategic thinking and dexterity. There is a wonderful balance to keep a wide range of age happy and challenged.
