Stories about adventures and magic are popular with kids and adults. They not only nourish the imagination, but also reinforce positive virtues such as bravery and teamwork.
If you are looking for a good fantasy story for kids, you should check out Fox Tales. Developed by OhNoo Studios, it's an interactive book-app with the features of an adventure game.
Save the Fox Valley
The story follows two fox warriors—Samar and Kala—on their perilous journey to gather materials for a magical fishing rod. Relying on their wit and resourcefulness, the brave pair tries to overcome various obstacles and defeat any creature that stand in their path.
Fox Tales offers 45 pages of hand-drawn illustrations that come alive with beautiful animations, fun 3D effects, and epic background music. You can touch the things on the page to discover small interactions, for example, a bird chirping in the trees or a key glowing with magical powers. Additionally, you can find small, yellow stars hidden throughout the book. Collect all 84 stars to unlock a secret area at the end of the story.
To navigate the book, simply use the arrows on the bottom of the page. You can also use the page index to skip to a certain page. The page index also displays the number of stars that you have found on each page for easy tracking.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Fox Tales is available in English, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese. You can change the default language anytime from the main menu or the page index. The narration is on by default, but you can turn it off if preferred. There is no text highlighting, but you can repeat the narration with a simple tap.
The app has no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases. It does contain links to external sites, such as the developer's other apps on iTunes, but they are secured behind a parental gate. Note that you might be prompted to rate the app when you first complete the story, but you can set it to never ask again. Fox Tales is suitable for ages 5 to 12.
Things I Like
Like other book-apps from OhNoo Studios, Fox Tales is fantastic. It's beautifully illustrated and loaded with interactive features to keep kids engaged from start to finish. Because there are so many details to discover, you can read the story repeatedly and still find something new each time.
The story itself is well written. The plot is interesting, the characters are unique, and there are positive messages about teamwork, determination, and resourcefulness. I love that you get two protagonists—one male and one female—with their own unique set of skills and traits. This makes the app more appealing for everyone.
The only issue I have is that while the hidden stars make for a nice incentive, they can be rather hard to catch. This might frustrate younger readers. I would suggest decreasing the movement speed of these stars so that you don't have be to so nimble to grab them.
I highly recommend Fox Tales if your kids love stories about fantasy and adventures. Well written and beautifully illustrated, the app is also packed with lots of interactive features that keep kids engaged from start to end. Great for ages 5-12.
