A wonderful thing about board games is that they allow you to learn new things while having fun. The Orchard by HABA, for example, is a board game app for kids ages three and up that teaches them about colors and fruits.
Harvest the Fruits
The Orchard by HABA is based on a board game of the same name, which was first released in 1986. Unlike the board game, the app doesn't function as a multiplayer game. Instead, it allows kids to learn and have fun in a single-player setting.
The gameplay is fairly straightforward: stop Theo the sneaky raven from stealing the fruits in the orchard. To do so, you spin a game wheel on the top right of the screen. If it lands on a color, you drag a fruit of that color into your basket. For example, red for cherries, yellow for pears, purple for plum, and orange for peaches.
On the other hand, if the wheel lands on the picture of a raven, Theo will move one step forward. The game is over once Theo has moved five steps forward. Your goal is to finish picking all the fruits in the orchard before the raven gets near enough to steal your basket.
If you manage to win the game, you collect a seed that you can plant on the main screen. The seeds will grow into colorful flowers. The more seeds you plant, the more cheerful the screen becomes.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Orchard by HABA is available in 13 languages, including English, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. You can change the app's language anytime by tapping on the Settings menu from the main screen, and selecting your preferred language.
The app is safe for kids. It has no advertising or in-app purchases, and can be played without an Internet connection.
Things I Like
The Orchard by HABA is a great app to get kids started with board games (and learning about colors along the way). It has only a few rules, and is very easy to learn. If you are playing for the first time, a narrator will guide you through the gameplay. Each round of game is short but perfectly timed for young gamers.
The design of the app is quite well done. The watercolor-inspired graphics are beautiful and smoothly animated. There are little surprises here and there that keep the game lighthearted. You can, for example, touch the flowers in the orchard and the bees buzzing about to watch small animations. Theo the raven also does all sorts of amusing things when he creeps near. He will throw fruits at you and leave a splash of fruit juice all over the screen, which you must wipe away before you can continue playing.
My only gripe about the app is that it doesn't have a multiplayer mode. I understand that the single-player mode might be easier to achieve on the tablet, but I can't help but wonder if a multiplayer mode would extend the shelf life of the app. It certainly sounds like a lot of fun to be able to play with your family and friends.
I highly recommend checking out The Orchard by HABA if you're a fan of the original board game, or if you just want to introduce your young kids to board games in general. It's well made and easy to learn, and the interactive features keep young kids engaged. What's more, it can also help kids learn about colors and fruits.
