It doesn’t take a fancy, store-bought toy to make children happy. With a little imagination — and probably lots of duct tape — even a cardboard box can provide hours of entertainment: you can turn it into a rocket ship, a race car, or even a robot. They don’t need really need an app for that, but something like Moonbeeps: Gizmo can potentially add an interesting twist to a traditional game.

What’s a Moonbeeps: Gizmo? To put it simply, it’s an app that turns your iOS device into a virtual control panel for your child’s cardboard creations, complete with sliders, buttons, and knobs that make all sorts of fun noises and visual effects.

For example, you can press on the “defcon” buttons to call out an emergency, spin the dial on the left to check in with your crew, switch control panels using oscillating crystal switcher, shoot lasers, and so on. If you activate all the six switches on the top, you can enter “overdrive” mode and get a 360-degree view of the deep space.

Unlike most apps, Moonbeeps: Gizmo isn’t meant to be used alone. Rather, it’s a support device as kids have their fun in the “real world”. How much fun you’re going to have depends on your imagination and creativity, but the app alone is really well done.

The interface looks really nice, for starters. It has that futuristic, high-tech feel with a colorful color palette. The sound design is amazing: each button press returns a satisfying click and the low, whirring sound of an engine contributes to the overall feeling of being in a spaceship.

It doesn’t mean that you can only use the app to make a cardboard rocket, though. The app listing suggests a fort from blanket and pillows or a robot suit from aluminum foil, for example. Who knows, maybe you can even build a robot pirate ship in outer space?

Safety-wise, I’m happy to report that the app contains no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases. There’s a section for parents that explains a bit about the app, but it’s secured with a math problem. Also, you don’t need an Internet connection to use app.

All in all, if your children love adventures and pretend play, I suggest you give Moonbeeps: Gizmo a try. It’s great because it doesn’t restrain your children to their device. Rather, it fuels their imagination by incorporating the device into real-world play.
