Flashcards are a popular choice for parents to help their children learn new words, and for good reason — they’re easy to use and effective. Nowadays, you can get a good flashcard app from the App Store easily, so you no longer have to make your own from scratch. An app I recommend is Tap that Pic!

It’s a flashcard game that covers toddler-friendly topics, such as vegetables, fruits, shapes, colors, farm animals, furniture, and musical instruments. There are more than 100 pictures spread across 10 categories, which should translate to a fairly extensive vocabulary.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple, and should be easy to pick up. First, the app will show you a picture with its name read aloud. Then, it will ask you to tap that picture within a group (hence the app name, Tap that Pic!) For example, tap the cauliflower from a selection of two vegetables. It also gets harder over time as you get more pictures to select from.

Each successful attempt is met with positive encouragement, before the app moves on to the next picture on the list. With flashcards, repetition is key, and the app loops through a category endlessly unless you choose to quit.

What’s great about this app is its intuitive design; you don’t need instructions to use it. The graphics are lovely, and the audio is of excellent quality. I particularly like that you can set the difficulty level to “hard” for kids who have grasped the concept but still need some practice in recognizing the objects. The “hard” level eliminates the step that shows you the picture and its name, and goes straight to the quiz.

Overall, this is an excellent flashcard app that would benefit kids ages 2+. Although simple, it’s thoughtfully designed with beautiful imagery and excellent audio. It also packs a fairly large library to expand your child’s knowledge about various topics. If you’re looking for an effective flashcard app for toddlers, give Tap that Pic! a try.
