Some time ago, we posted a review about a fantastic board game that all ages can play together. Called We Discover Africa: Safari Quest, it combines a 3D board game with animal trivia. What makes the app special is that you can customize each player’s difficulty level, and thus level the playing field for all ages.

If you, too, enjoyed Safari Quest, then you might want to check out the newest app in the We Discover board game series. It’s called We Discover Wildlife: Forest Quest, and is now available on the App Store. As the title suggests, it features a forest theme.

Answer Quizzes and Hunt for Photos

The mechanism in We Discover Wildlife: Forest Quest is the same as in the previous app. Players take turn to roll the dice and move their respective pieces along a scenic forest path. They’ll also complete various tasks on each turn, such as answering questions, collecting bonuses, facing obstacles, and taking photos of various forest animals. To win, the player must collect photos of seven different animals and be the first one to cross the finish line.

The game is playable by 2 to 4 players, or by one player against the computer. At the beginning of the game, you can customize each player’s name, avatar, color, and difficulty level (easy, medium, hard). The harder the level, the trickier the questions they’ll get.

Parents Need to Know

Because the app has fairly simple rules and individual player settings, it should be accessible by kids as young as four years old. However, please note that the app doesn’t have audio narration, thus beginning readers might need some help from grown-ups. The app is available in several languages, namely English, German, Russian, Swedish.

The app does not include third-party ads, or in-app purchases. It includes links to the developer’s website, Facebook page, and other apps, but they are secured behind a kid lock.

Things I Like

Just like Safari Quest, this app presents each player with a first-person view of the board. You can also zoom in and pan the camera when you are taking a photo. This perspective, in combination with the atmospheric sound effects, will make you feel as if you are really trekking through a forest filled with exotic animals. If you want to see where everyone else is on the board, you can tap on the little search icon on the bottom right of the screen.

What makes the We Discover series great is it provides ample opportunity to learn as you play. Forest Quest, for example, has a huge reservoir of over 350 questions and answers related to forest animals. You’re bound to learn something new every time you play, regardless of your age or preferred difficulty level. Some sample questions you’ll find in the app:

  • Which bird lives in the forest? (Easy)
  • What does a tit usually eat in winter when its main food is not available? (Medium)
  • A stoat has chocolate-colored fur in the summer. What is the color of its fur in winter? (Hard)

One thing that would make the app even better is if it includes a section for players to learn about these animal facts before playing, or perhaps a trivia that gets displayed after you’ve answered a question. I also think some of the questions could be rewritten to sound more natural in English. Still, the app is pretty great in its current state, and I can’t wait to see more apps in this series.

Update: as of v3.12, the app includes an encyclopedia where kids can read factual details about the forest animals to help them answer the questions within the game. Players can also add their own question sets to the app via browser on their desktop computer. Other notable features are two new game modes, as well as Leaderboard and Achievements.

Conclusion

Kindermatica’s fantastic board game series gets a solid addition in We Discover Wildlife: Forest Quest. Sporting the same, engaging gameplay as its predecessor and photorealistic visuals, this educational trek through the forest will appeal to players of all ages. I highly recommend this pass-and-play board game for family game time, road trips, and even classroom settings.
