Achoo Gaboo: An Inventive Tale about a Sneezing Elephant

When you’re a kid, everything is amusing: your feet, mispronounced words, sneezes. But I bet fewer things are more amusing than a elephant that can’t stop sneezing.

If you agree, then you should check out Achoo Gaboo. It’s the debut book-app from Pixure Book Publishing, about an adorable elephant with a sneezing fit.

Achoo!

Poor Gaboo can’t stop sneezing. His amused monkey friends tell him “bless you” every time he sneezes, but Gaboo thinks he’s cursed. He tries all sorts of tricks to stop the sneezing, but it just won’t stop. What more can he do?

Created by Josie Cellone and beautifully illustrated by Timothy Banks, Achoo Gaboo is a humorous tale filled with silly rhymes and colorful animations. It is interactive; you can tap on the characters on every page to reveal small animations or added dialogs. When you tap on Gaboo or whenever he sneezes, his trunk will blow rainbow bubbles that you can pop with a tap of your finger. Additionally, you can play peek-a-boo with his monkey friends.

To move the story forward, you simply swipe left on the page. Optionally, you can tap on the arrow that appears on the upper right-hand side after you’ve discovered all the available interactions on a page. A safety measure ensures that you can only turn the page once the narration has finished -- a nice touch to keep little fingers from accidentaly leaving the page.

Parents Need to Know

Achoo Gaboo is designed to promote language development in ages 2-5. It comes with a lively English narration, but text highlighting is currently unavailable. If your child is older, or if you prefer to read the story to your child, you can turn off the narration from within the “grown-ups” section.

The app contains no ads, no in-app purchases, and no external links. You don’t need an Internet connection to play. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is available exclusively on App Store. Please note that the app requires iOS 8.1 or later.

Things I Like

The thing about some book apps is that they don’t offer anything that physical books can’t provide. I mean, sure, they may have moving pictures and all that jazz, but the interactions are shallow. Even if you take away these interactions, you won’t feel like anything is missing.

But Achoo Gaboo never feels like one of those book-apps. The moving parts really are effective, and if you take them away the story just doesn’t feel complete.

My favorite part is the frame-by-frame shots of Gazoo sneezing. When you swipe to the last frame, giant bubbles will spill into the page and a loud trumpeting sound can be heard. You can print this scene in a physical book, but you can’t replicate the reading experience.

In the future, it would be nice if the app included an option to jump to a specific page. Text highlighting would also be helpful for early readers.

Conclusion
