Last week, my five-year-old had his analog clock lessons in kindergarten. He learned about sharp times, such as 7 o’clock, and half past times, such as 7:30. I used Quick Clocks - Telling Time to help him practice these concepts, but it’s probably a bit more complicated for his needs.

Fortunately, the team at Cupcake Digital contacted me about their new app, Telling Time with the Smurfs. With the help of cute Smurf characters, the narrator teaches you how to tell the time by manipulating the hour hand and the minute hand on an analog clock.

You Can Smurf It!

There are four types of activities that you can perform in this app: Learn, Read, Practice, and Play. I’d suggest starting with the Learn section first. This is where the app teaches you about analog clock, the hour hand, the minute hand, and asks you to set specific times according to the activities in the Smurfs village.

Once you understand these basic concepts, you can continue with the Read section. You will help the Smurfs in the interactive story to perform their daily routines in a timely manner. Simply set the hour hand of the analog clocks according to the storyline.

Then, you should be ready for a more in-depth Practice session, which involves setting up to 10 different times on the analog clock. Once you’re comfortable with setting the time, you can challenge yourself with the Play activities.

The Play section has two modes: Easy and Hard. In the Easy mode, you need to choose the correct clock face according to a specified time. In the Hard mode, you need to tap and hold on the iPad to steer the bird instead of just tapping on your selection. The Hard mode also features non-sharp times, such as 10:10.

Parents Need to Know

Based on its contents, Telling Time with the Smurfs is suitable for kids ages 4+ who are learning how to tell the time. It focuses more on learning, and all the activities ensure that kids understand how the hour hand and the minute hand in an analog clock work.

The app works great on Airplane mode, and does not have any in-app purchases, advertising, or links to social networks. Because it’s a Universal app with a relatively small file size, you can also install it on your iPhone and bring it wherever you go with your kids. It’s a great way to practice an important life skill and a bit of their reading skills.

Things I Like

While most apps that help kids learn to tell the time focus more on practice games, Telling Time with the Smurfs decides to focus more on the learning. It especially emphasizes on analog clocks. Adding a contextual storyline also helps kids to relate to their own routines. Stories are easier to remember, so you can use them whenever you want to teach your kids how to tell the time.

The app is also a great way to expose kids to the Smurfs. I loved reading The Smurfs comics when I was still in Elementary school. Now, it’s going to be easier for me to introduce my kids to the Smurfs comics the next time we go to the bookstore.

Kids can also practice their skills with accuracy up to five minutes.

It uses the Smurfs characters and a contextual storyline, making it easier for kids to relate the story to their own routines. With multiple ways to learn and practice on how to use both hands of an analog clock, my three-year-old is now able to tell the time on his own.
