Over a year since its release, the Frozen fever is still going strong. In fact, just last week Disney released its newest Frozen app, Frozen: Story Theater. It’s a part of the company’s Story Theater app, which lets you create animated stories starring your favorite Disney characters. This time, your favorite characters from Arendelle are taking center stage.

Let It Roll

Frozen: Story Theater comes in two play mode: “Story Play” with guided prompts, and “Free Play” for open-ended storytelling. In the former mode, the app will provide a story based on your selection of character, place, surprise, and prop. For example, you can choose Anna in the Icy Forest.

Every time you make your selection, a narrator will read a short passage for you to animate. You can move your characters on the screen, resizing and rotating them with your fingers when necessary. You can also record your voice to give your characters something to say.

In the Free Play mode, you can create any story using as many elements as you like. You also get to choose a background music for your story. The self-directed approach is suitable for older kids who already have a grasp on storytelling.

In either modes, you can save your recording in the in-app gallery to watch later. Optionally, you can import each recording to your device’s Camera Roll.

Parents Need to Know

Frozen: Story Theater features simple controls accessible to children as young as five years old. Audio guides and animated tutorials are provided throughout the app to help them get started. If necessary, a how-to section is also available from the main screen.

A fun app for the whole family, Frozen: Story Theater supports multi-touch. This means several people can play together on the same device, with each person controlling their own character.

The app does not contain in-app purchases. But, as with other Disney apps, it contains advertising for the Walt Disney Family of Companies in secured section for parents. It is available in English, and can be downloaded as a Universal app on the App Store.

Things I Like

As expected from Story Theater apps, Frozen: Story Theater is beautifully illustrated. It also has a wide selection of character poses, places, and props. These elements are unlocked from the get-go (a new-to-us feature since we reviewed our last Story Theater app), allowing kids to create their stories freely.

While the purpose of the app is to entertain, you can use it to teach your child about the basics of storytelling. For example, you can use the Story Play mode to show her that stories are made up of characters, places, events, and props. The secured parents section also has suggestions for fun offline activities you can do together to reinforce your child’s concepts about story structure.

Conclusion

This beautifully illustrated app puts your child in the director’s seat and lets them create their own Frozen spin-offs. Simple and intuitive, it lets even the youngest of storytellers unleash their creativity. A fun app for Frozen fan of all ages.
