Do your kids like to watch movies or TV shows? Have they ever asked you how those movies and TV shows are made? If your kids are interested in knowing how movies are made, I might have a perfect app for them. ToonSpaghetti for Kids is a free iPad app that allows you and your kids to choose and combine several movie elements to create your own.

Understanding the Story Structure

When you start using ToonSpaghetti, you will be asked to choose one main character and one storyline. Once you do, the narrator will start narrating the first part of the story structure, i.e. the beginning. Then, you can choose which background music that you’d like to use for the part.

There are three music options that you can choose for each story part. Once you’ve found the perfect music, simply drag it onto the timeline. You can also choose the sound effect for the story part using a similar process, the difference being there are four sound options instead of three.

The remaining parts of the story structure are the middle and the end. You can also choose your own background music and sound effects for each part. Once you have completed all the music arrangements, you can preview your movie from beginning to end.

For each story part, you can choose from three background music and four sound effects.

Parents Need to Know

Based on provided stories, ToonSpaghetti is more appropriate for kids ages 5+. Both stories require a level of imagination and (possibly) some reference to pop culture. The older your kids are, the more likely they could enjoy and expand the story with their own imaginations.

ToonSpaghetti works great without Internet connection. As of the current version, it doesn’t have third-party ads and in-app purchases. If you want to share the videos your kids have made with your family and friends, you can do so from within the app.

ToonSpaghetti also gives you questions that will help you understand the storyline and how it may affect someone's mood.

Things I Like

I know for a fact that there are many people who don’t have a clue about the basic story structure, which is a shame because knowing this can get you a long way. Storytelling is a skill that many professions need, and it’s something that can be learned from a very young age.

Using ToonSpaghetti, you can clearly feel the difference between having a background music to boost the mood and not having one. You can also sense how different background music and sound effects may be better for different parts of the story. It’s a great and easy way to experiment with different movie elements and see how they will affect the final product.

Once you have chosen all the movie elements, you can preview the completed movie and revise as necessary.

Conclusion

ToonSpaghetti helps kids ages 5+ to understand a simple model of how a movie is made by creating their own. Kids will learn about the basic story structure, and how background music and sound effects can elevate the audience mood. Try showing it to your kids and you just might have a potential movie director in your own family.
