One moment awaited by many parents is for their babies to say their first words. Based on my experience, their first words are usually related to family members and basic activities, such as drinking, eating, and sleeping. When my first and second sons were babies, there weren’t many apps available on the App Store that can help to enrich their vocabularies. But now, as my third son closes in on his sixth month, I’m glad that My First Words (+1) by PlayToddlers exists.

From Animals and Clothes to Colors and Family Members

My First Words (+1) offers more than 100 words organized into 14 groups. For example, the first three groups are called Animals, Clothes, and At Home, because they consist of words such as dog, hat, and chair, respectively. These groups are represented by train cars, which you’ll see on the main screen.

Within each group, your task is to match the objects. You must choose which of the eight objects on the top match the object on the bottom. Once you’ve found it, the object’s name will be announced and the next set of objects will be shown.

Once you’ve completed a group, you can move to the next group or go back to the main menu. If you choose to play the next group, you’re following the group sequence as shown in the flashcard train. For example, after the first three groups above, you can play with Toys, Body Parts, and Bedroom groups.

By tapping on the Home button, you can go back to the main menu and choose any group that you’d like to play, regardless of their sequence. The other groups of flashcards that you can play include Colors, Family, Outdoors, Food, At School, In the Kitchen, In the Bathroom, and Tools.

Parents Need to Know

As the name suggests, My First Words (+1) is more suitable for toddlers aged 18 months or older. Most kids this age are learning their first words, and it's always nice to have a fun app that can aid their learning process. Keep in mind that your toddlers need to be able to match pictures by colors and shapes, and to use their fingers to drag objects across the screen.

My First Words (+1) works without any Internet connection. It doesn't have any third-party ads, in-app purchases, or links to social networks. It's designed appropriately with toddlers in mind.

The words are shown as flashcards, and are organized into 14 groups shown as train carts.

Things I Like

My First Words (+1) offers more than a simple flashcard activity. It also requires some thinking and moving on the toddler’s part. Not only will the child need to figure out which of the eight objects matches the one being requested, he’ll also need to drag it to its match. This requires him to identify colors and shapes, which may not be a trivial thing for ages 1+ to do.

My First Words (+1) supports Spanish in addition to English. This allows you and your kids to learn these first words in Spanish, too. Once your kids have mastered the English words, you can introduce them or their older siblings to the Spanish words.

Other groups include food, colors, toys, and tools.

Conclusion

My First Words (+1) offers a fun way to introduce more than 100 first words for toddlers ages 1+. By dragging matching flash cards, kids can hear and learn what they are called. Overall, it's a great sight words app for your toddlers to play with. Even their older siblings can benefit from it by learning what the Spanish equivalent for these words are.
