Sixty years ago, American linguist Noam Chomsky composed the sentence “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously” to prove the concept that sentences can be grammatical but nonsensical. The same concept is also the inspiration of Sleep Furiously, a whimsical game that takes word games to a new level.

Sleep Furiously

In Sleep Furiously, you connect words from a jumbled grid to form complete sentences. The sentences doesn’t have to make sense, but they must be grammatically correct. Thus, the resulting possibilities are often absurd, for example, “The nervously ugly boys forgave the oddly lonely exposed cars.”

When you open the app, you’ll be presented with three game modes to choose from. There’s the classic Moves, in which you try to get the highest score within a limited number of moves, and the Timed mode, in which you try to find as many sentences as you can in 90 seconds. There’s also the Endless mode in which you compose sentences without any restrictions.

As you play, do note that you can get bonus points for using alliterations in your sentences. You can also earn various Game Center achievements, such as Speedy (earning more than 200 points in timed mode) or Linguistic Genius (making a 16-word sentence).

Parents Need to Know

Sleep Furiously is a fun game that can be enjoyed by all ages. Even though it’s not designed specially for kids, it can help middle school-aged kids improve their understanding of grammar. At the same time, adults who enjoy word games like SpellTower will likely appreciate its uncommon yet clever mechanic.

The app contains no third-party advertising and no in-app purchases, however do note that it allows you to share sentences you’ve made to social media. On another note, Internet connection isn’t required to play the game.

Things I Like

As a fan of word games in general, I think Sleep Furiously is unique and thoughtfully designed. I had a lot of fun competing with my friends to see who can come up with the weirdest sentences, as well as the longest. And I think that’s what so great about this game: whatever it is you’re aiming for — be it the high score or the most bizarre sentence — you’d have fun doing it.

In terms of educational value, the game is a great tool to help kids develop their grammar sense. It’s certainly a lot more fun than traditional practice sheets, although just as valuable to see if kids really do understand how to compose a proper sentence.

As great as the game is, however, there are some things I would love to see improved (or added). For example, I’d love to see a leaderboard or some sort to make the game more fun to play with friends. Statistics on my best games would be nice, as well as the ability to save my favorite sentences.
