Have you ever had problems with getting your kids to eat healthy meals? If you’re running out of ideas to persuade them to eat their fruits and vegetables, you might want to take a look at my app pick for today: Yo Gabba Gabba! Party in My Tummy. It’s a relatively brand new app from Cupcake Digital that’s based on characters, stories, and music from a popular TV series on Nick Jr., Yo Gabba Gabba!
There’s a Party in My Tummy
The app starts with a warm greeting from DJ Lance Rock, inviting juniors to have lunch with Yo Gabba Gabba! friends. Five characters from the TV series will accompany them: Muno, a male red cyclops; Foofa, the female pink flower bubble character; Brobbe, the small male green baby monster; Toddee, the blue female arctic cat-dragon; and Plex, the male yellow robot who is portrayed as the leader of Gabba Land.
Kids can choose a character that they want to eat with, and the app will randomly show a menu that the character would like to have. Tapping on the lunch icon will take kids to the kitchen table where they help to prepare the meal.
There are seven different healthy meals to make, ranging from pasta and pizza to sandwich and salad. Juniors will interact with 20+ healthy ingredients as they prepare the meal, including broccoli, lettuce, and avocado.
To prepare the meal, they need to follow the narrated instruction to drag the ingredients onto the serving plate/bowl. A meal may require four to five different ingredients.
Once the meal is ready, kids can feed the hungry character by dragging the meal from the serving bowl. When the character finishes her lunch, the app will take kids to see the inner parts of her tummy where the ingredients get together for a party.
Juniors are required to match the shapes of different ingredients spread around the tummy before the party can start. When it does, be prepared to sing along to these lyrics:
There’s a party in my tummy
(So yummy. So yummy.)
When your juniors have prepared several meals, the app rewards them with a bonus game where they can clean up the left-overs.
Parents Need to Know
In addition to the fun activities of preparing lunch meals and matching the shapes of healthy ingredients, the app also includes the full-length music video of Party in My Tummy. It’s a really nice video that illustrates why the healthy ingredients want to have a party inside the character’s tummy.
The app also provide coloring pages featuring Yo Gabba Gabba! characters. Kids can tap to fill the picture with colors, and place fun stickers. They can save their creation to the Camera Roll by tapping on the Camera button inside the top left pulldown menu.
Things I Like
The Party in My Tummy song is really catchy. As the app was one of the most played in my household for the entire end-year holiday, the song really stuck -- good thing that I can find a good use for it.
Apparently, my two-year-old Noah loves the song and the activities dearly. He understands the concept of the meals wanting to have a party inside his tummy. It’s now easier for me to persuade him to eat by singing this song and telling him that the meals and vitamins want to have a party in his tummy.
You can also use this app to introduce different meals that your juniors may not be familiar with, such as sushi and oatmeal yoghurt. They can also learn about the inner parts of their tummies, such as stomach, duodenum, and colon.
Yo Gabba Gabba! Party in My Tummy is a really fun activity app to introduce juniors ages 2–4 to healthy meals. It has all the things that appeal to toddlers: funky music that’s easy to sing along to, intuitive gameplay, and relatable theme. I find the app helpful to persuade my sons when they’re refusing to eat their healthy meals.
