Happy Friday, folks! I hope everyone had a great week. Eric and I both had a pretty hectic schedule this week so we’re really looking forward to the weekend.
If you’ve been following us on the blog or on Twitter, you’ve probably heard that the highly anticipated update to the popular side-scrolling game, Tiny Wings, went live yesterday. It’s a terrific update and I’m pretty sure I’ll be playing it a lot this weekend. In the mean time, I hope you enjoy this list of fun trivia about Tiny Wings.
Tiny Wings was first released on February 18, 2011. It is the work of Andreas Illiger, a indie game developer from Germany. Illiger single-handedly designed and coded the app, drew all the artwork, and composed the the theme music.
Tiny Wings is Illiger’s first and (so far) only iOS app. His other work is a Windows-based audio-visual game, Microsia, released in 2009.
Tiny Wings was selected as Europe App Store’s iPhone Game of the Year 2011 by Apple.
Tiny Wings 2.0 update is available for free because Illiger wanted to thank his loyal fans and because he dislikes having in-app purchases in his game. Speaking to Touch Arcade, Illiger said:
I [never] clarified if it will be an update or an separate app before the release because then my fans will be happy on the release day when they see that the sequel isn’t a separate app and they will get it for free. I worked on the 2.0 version for the last 12 months and everyone told me I should make a separate app out of it and sell it again (because it is almost a new game and I would earn a lot more money). It was a heavy decision for me to give away this new version for free but it feels right (most people I talked about this subject don’t understand it).
So I decided to give it away for free as a big “thank you” to all my fans for changing my life. That’s really important for me and the reason why I make this little stupid marketing trick of confusing my fans before the release.
In an interview with Flow Studio, Illiger explained that Tiny Wings was originally developed as a game for toddlers.
I was thinking about what game I could make for a 1,5 year old. I played many different versions in my mind before starting the real work so there were only small changes eventually over 7 months of development.
In Tiny Wings 2.0, we see the birds fly during the night for the first time in Flight School. The third level in every island takes place at night.
The maximum number of nests you can upgrade to (in the 1.x version) is 10 nests which will get you 28x score multiplier. Here’s a list of all the objectives required for each nest, compiled nicely by IGN.
Version 2.0 has 30 unlockable Achievements, three more than the previous version. The new ones added are far away from home, fever king and no fever no fun.
What is the farthest island that you can reach in Tiny Wings? In version 1.0, there was a glitch that caused the game to crash when reaching the 10th Island. It has been fixed since, but no one has reported going farther than Island 11.
